The opposite end of the bolt is directed outwardly as indicated at 24 through a guiding opening 25, which 1s diagonally opposed to the opemng 22. The
is substantially Z shaped. The projecting portions of the bolts 20 and 21 are 111 substantial alincinont, s clearly shown in Fig.
5. The ii'itermediatc portion of the bolt 21, however is provided with a'portion 26 directed at right angles to the outer portions thereof toward the portion 241-. A portion 27 of the bolt 21 extends parallel with the portion 24: of the bolt 20 through the opening 25 and extends across the caslng to a point beyond the transversely extending por tion 23. The bolt 21 is here provided with a transversely extending portion 28 extendingparallel with the portion 23, and which terminates at the opposite side of the casing in a portion 29 directed at right angles thereto and extending outwardly through the opening 22 and parallel with the bolt 20, whereby the bolt 21 is retained in posltion nd suitably guided. The intermediate portion of the bolt 21 is, therefore, substantially U-shaped.
Pivotally mounted within the casing of the lock between the transversely extending portions 23 and 28 is an actuating plate 30 provided with lugs 31 and 32 arranged between the transversely extending portions of the bolts and adapted to rotate to cause a separation of these parallel transverse portions. Intermediate the lugs 31 and 32 i a lug 33 adapted to be engaged by a suitable key, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, whereby the plate may be rotated to separate the parallel transverse portions of the bolts causing the outer ends thereof to move toward each other. The parallel transverse portions of the bolts tend to move toward each other by reason of springs 34 which normally keep the outer ends of the bolts projected, as shown in Figs. 2 nd 3.
The portions of the bolts outside of the lock casing and upon the cover are protected by means of casings 35 to prevent unauthorized manipulation of the bolts to unlock the cover.
The outer ends of the bolts terminate in hooks 36 having suitable cam edges 37. These cam edges are engageable with the inner edges 38 of the flanges 12, whereby the bolts are retracted when the cover is swung down against the front to allowthe cover to swing into position. The bolts, however,
immediately spring outwardly and engage the insides of the flanges 12 by reason of the lock casing.
the springs 3 1, substantially as shown in Fig. 3, providing a very strong lock which Mounted upon the insides of the flanges .12 and arranged in alinementwith the easings 35, are housings 39 into which the ends of the hooks 36 project when the cover is closed whereby the bolts and hooks are fully protected against manipulation by unauthorized persons, the same being entirely inclosed throughout their lengths.
Upon the cover may be also arranged clips 4.0 adapted to receive tickets and note paper of different kinds. a
The box may also be provided with a suitable handle 41 at the top thereof, if'so desired.
In use the box should be kept open and in the osition shown in Fig. 2, until the milk bott es are fastened in the holders 11 by the milkman. It should be noticed that the recesses or spaces 7 are immediately above the holders and allow the easy insertion and removal of the milk bottles and free play of the tops thereof, as the bottles are swung outwardly and inwardly. After inserting the bottles in the holders the milkman can push down the cover when it will be automatically locked. The arrangement is such that the milk bottles cannot be removed while the cover is downandlocked. The cover serves as a lock or obstruction to prevent the swinging of the bottles sufficiently to allow them to spring out of the holders 11. On the other hand, the lower portions of the bottles will be fully exposed to the air and can be aifected by atmospheric conditions and sunlight. It can also be easily seen whether the box contains milk or not.
While we have shown anddescribed one embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not desire "to be limited to the details of construction herein shown and described for obvious modifications will be apparent to anyone skilled in the holders, a cover closing; one side of said.
pox, and means for locking said cover to the ox. p
2. The combination with a box open at the front and havingsides provided at their front edges with inwardly directed flanges,
of holders within the box adapted to en age the necks of milk bottles and retain t em in vertical position, a .cover, and a lock mounted on said cover and having bolts said flanges upon the in whereby the cover is locked in one side and having inwardly directed.
flanges, of holders for milk bottles mounted within the box, a cover provided with marginal flanges and pivoted by the outer edge of one horizontal flange to the top of said box inwardly of the front edge thereof, said cover flanges comprising side flanges adapted to engage the sides of the box and an opposite horizontal flange spaced from the side flanges whereby the inwardly directed flanges of the box may not interfere when the cover is in closed position, a look mounted upon the inside of said cover and providedwith bolts adapted to engage the inwardly directed flanges of the box to retain the cover in closed position.
a. The combination with a box having an open side, of clamping holders mounted interiorly of the box on the side opposite the opening and adapted to engage milk bottles, and a cover hinged to the box at its top and Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the movable downwardly over the open side to extend a considerable distance below the plane of the clamping holders and also adapted to swing upwardly above the plane of the top.
5. The combination with a box having an open side, of clamping holders mounted interiorly of the box on the side opposite the opening and adapted to engage milk bottles, a cover hinged to the box at its top and movable downwardly over the open side to extend a considerable distance below the plane of the clamping holders and also adapted to swing upwardly above the plane of the top, and means carried by the cover and engageable with the box to sustain said cover in its lowered position.
In testimony, that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
