To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CLIEL L. GRIMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invent-ed a certain new and useful Improvement in Pen and Pencil Holders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whichl form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a combination pencil holder and advertising device and its object is an advertising device for use in public places having a pen and pencil in combination therewith. Another object of the invention is an advertising device of the character described which is of cheap construction and simple in operation. These and other objects and the several novel features of the invention in its preferred form are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device.

Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the method of forming the display card holding lips and also illustrating the arrangement of pulleys and shafts therefor.

The device consists of a four-sided metal body 1 having a. base 2 in the shape of a truncated pyramid, the body 1 being bent over at the top to provide a liange 3. A glass top l is provided which lits the liange 3 and which is also four-sided and has a dome shaped top. An electric socket 5 is secured wit-hin the base and an electric light 6 is mounted in the top of the member 1 and connected to the socket 5 'by the wires 7. The base is also shaped so as to form a holder for the ink well 8 and the sides of the body 1 have lips 9 formed therewith which are adapted to hold cards having advertising matter printed thereon. formed on the front and back sides so that the cards may be changed on these two sides, the other two sides having permanent advertisements thereon.

TheJ cable also passes downward and over rollers 11 on a shaft 15, the cables extending through the openings 16 in the member 1 and being secured about a pen or pencil 17 which are held in place on the side of the device by the clips 18. The shaft 10 is mounted at one side of the body to prevent the weights 13 from becoming entangled with the cables 12 between the rollers 14 and the apertures 16 when the weights are lifted.

The glass top 1 has a permanent advertisement thereon and by lighting the electric light 6 this advertisement is shown to advantage. The base also has advertising matter thereon, there being a permanent advertisement on the side containing the ink well and removable advertisements on the other two sides held in pla'ce by the lips 9.

vWhen in use the device is placed in public places such as hotels, post oitices, schools and other public buildings where the advertisements will be seen by a large number of people. For instance, when it is necessary to register at a hotel either the pen or pencil would be disengaged from the corresponding clip 18 and while using it the advertisements are brought to ones attention.

To write with the pencil 17 it is disengaged from the clip 18 and the cable 12 which is secured to the pencil can be drawn out through the opening 16 and as the pencil is drawn away from the member 1 the weight is lifted, the distance the pencil may be drawn being equal to the dist-ance from the weight 13 t0 the pulley 11. When the writing is finished the pencil may be released at which time the weight would tend to bring it back to its original position it being understood that a pencil or pen may be provided for each of the four sides of the deviceso that four pencils or pens may be used by providing suflicient cables, weights, etc. foreach pencil or pen. The pen also operates in the same manner as the pencil, the ink well being placed adjacent thereto so that it is convenient for the user.

A number of different advertisements can pany, while on the part of the base containing the ink well would appear the advertisement of an ink manufacturing company and other advertisements could be placed there-v on as would be readily understood.

From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is easily operated and is very useful and very efficient as an advertising device.

Having thus briefly described my invention7 its utility and inode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is* l. In a device of the character described, a rectangular body having a comparatively wide base in the form of a truncated pyramid, the body extending vertically above the base, two opposite sides of the body being apertured, a shaft supported centrally between the other walls of the body and eX- tending at al right angle to a. line passing through the said apertures, a second shaft above said first named shaft positioned at a right angle thereto and at one side of a vertical plane passing through the said apertures, a pair of pulleys on the upper shaft, each positioned adjacent the end thereof and a pair of pulleys positioned centrally of the lower shaft, a pair of oweighted cables each running over one of the upper pulleys, thence about a lower pulley and extending through an aperture, a pen or pencil attached to the end of each cable, and a holder therefor secured to each apertured side of the body member.

In a device of the character described, a four sided body adapted for the exhibition of advertising matter, an upper and a lower shaft mounted at a right angle one to the other within the body, the lower shaft being mounted centrally of the body and the upper shaft being mounted to one side thereof, a pulley n each shaft, a weighted cable running over the pulley on the upper shaft and under the pulley on the lower shaft, an aperture in the body through which the cable passes and a pencil adjacent the aperture to which the cable is secured.

3. In a device. of the character described, a four sided body adapted for the exhibition of advertising matter, an aperture in one of the sides thereof, a clip adjacent the said aperture for holding a pen or pencil, a pair of shafts mounted at a right angle one to the other within the said body, pulleys on the said shafts, a cable running over the said pulleys one end being secured to the said pencil or pen and a weight secured to the other end of the said cable.
