To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE C. HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michi gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spring lifters or compress ing tools.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which is of simple construction, and consists of a few parts assembled in such a manner as to permit rapid adjustment of the tool when in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which comprises a pair of hingedly connected levers adapted to be engaged with the valve stem beneath the lower end of the spring associated therewith, and which may be separated to lift or compress the spring and to retain the same in this condition until it is desired to release the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for separating the hingedly con- I 'nected lever to elevate or compress the lower end of the spring, said means being adapted to separate the levers to any desired extent and to hold the same separated until it is desired to permit the spring to be released.
Further object of the invention as well as the construction and arrangement of the various elements thereof will be more clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a valve spring lifter or tool constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 1 illustrating the manner of attaching the adjusting nut to the lever.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 showing the arrangement of the slots in the levers.
In its preferred embodiment, my invention comprises a pair of oppositely arranged levers 1 and 2, which are hingedly connected together at one end as indicated at 3 and are slotted at their oppositeends as indicated at 4. These slots 4 are in alinement with one another and are adapted to receive the valve stem in the usual manner when the tool is in Specification of Letters Patent.

use. The levers are so shaped that the intermediate portions thereof are substantially parallel, while the opposite end portions thereof are curved inwardly toward one another substantially as shown. This permits the levers to be hingedly connected together at one end as indicated at 3, and also permits the opposite or free ends of the levers to come into close contact with one another. It will be also noted in this connection that thelevers are made of diminishing thickness from their connected ends to' their free ends so that the latter ends thereof when brought together may be inserted in a very'small space.
A post 5 has one end thereof reduced to provide a shoulder 6 which bears against the inner face of the lever 2 and an extension 7 which is extended through a suitable opening in said lever and has a cotter pin 8 or other suitable fastening means engaged with the free end thereof. The opposite end of this post is extended loosely through an opening 9 formed in the lever 1 and it will be noted in this connection that the said opening 9 is made somewhat elongated so as to permit free swinging movement of the lever 1. Movable on this post, between the levers 1 and 2 is a tubular adjusting nut 10,
which is engageable with the under face of the lever 1 to swing the same away from the lever 2 and is provided with a plurality of radially extending actuating arms 9 which serve as handles when rotating said nut. It will be seen that by moving this nut along the length of the post 5 the distance between the levers 1 and 2 may be increased or de creased as desired.
In the use of my improved tool, the lever 1 may be engaged with the valve stem between the lower end of the spring encircling the same and the supporting washer provided on the stem for engagement with the lower end of said spring, and the lever 2 may be engaged with the stem at a lower point and rested against any suitable abutment such as the casing through which the valve stem passes. The adjusting nut 10 is now adjusted along the post 5 in the direc tion of the lever 1 and will force the lever away from the lever 2 thus forcing the lower end of the spring upwardly and compressing the same to the desired extent. When the repair or other work being done is completed, the nut 10 may be rotated in the reverse direction to permit the lever 1 to again move toward the lever 2 and allowing the spring to assume its normal position upon the valve stem.
