IMPROVEM ENT IN BOLT-CUTTERS.

Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 116,478, dated June 27, 1871.

To all 'iv/wm 'it may concern:

Be it known that we, ABNER W. OWEN and MIOL E. LILLEY, of East Canton, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Iinproveinentsin Bolt-Cutters, and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which forni a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofa bolt-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.

In order to enable others skilled. in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- A and A are the two jaws of our bolt-cutter, formed of one piece of metal split longitudinally nearly its entire length, the solid portion being inserted in a handle, B. The two jaws are sprung outward in such a manner that when forced together at their outer ends they will separate of themselves as soon as the force is removed. Upon the outer ends of the jaws A A1 are formed cutters c a', respectively, and on their sides, near the outer ends, are formed other cutters b b'. The sides of the jaws A A at the outer ends, and, so to say, between the cutters c c and b b', are grooved, and in the saine is placed a link, O, having a ca1n-1ever,D, hinged or pivoted at one end, the cam bearing against the back or outer side of the jaw A. By pressing down upon the lever D the jaws are forced together, bringing the cutters against each other, and when the lever is raised the spring of the jaws throws them apart. By having cutters on the sides as well as on the ends of the jaws bolts can be reached in almostevery position tobe cut. j

Havin g thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
