Be it known that I, MARCUS WEINBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tub Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

It is a matter of common experience in taking a bath in an ordinary bath tub, espe cially with elderly persons, or those partially lame, weak, or otherwise disabled, that it is not an easy matter to rise and step from the bath tub with safety. Serious accidents, and even death, have been caused by slipping when rising stepping out of a bath tub.

One object of my invention is to provide means which can be attached tol jany ordinary bath tub, and which, can-be used to assist the bather in leaving it.

A further object is to provide, in combination with such means, convenient means,

adjustable for use by persons of all sizesof Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is an enlarged vertical section on .the line 44 of Fig. 1, showing I also a portion of a bath tub; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a partial longitudinal vertical sectional view of a modified form of the invention.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a bath tub, which, in the form of the invention shown in Figs..1 to 5, is of metal, enameled, or otherwise. Through the periphery of said bath tub, at its foot, is formed a hole 2, (Fig. 4:) which is elongated in a direction transverse to the bath tub. Through this hole is inserted a pin 3, extending axially from the bottom of a bearing 4, which pin 3', in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, has upper and lower portions out ofalinement and an intervenlng elbow or bend 6, the pin, in order to insert it in said hole 2, being placed in the position'in which the bend extends in a cross-section.

direction transverse to the bath tub, and then, when the upper portion of the pin is in the hole, being turned so that the bend extends in the longitudinal direction of the bath tub, thus retaining the pin in place.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6, in which a porcelain bath tub is shown, there is shown a much deeper hole, and a straight pin 3 is used, since the bend in the pin is not then necessary to hold it in place when the attachment is in use.

The upper portion ofsaid bearing 4 is forked, as shown at 7, and in said fork is inserted a reduced flattened end of a pivot piece 8, swinging upon a shaft 9 formed'by a screw extending transversely through said fork 7, and on the projecting threaded end of said'shaft 9 is screwed a wing-nut 11, so that by screwing said wing-nut tight against said fork 7 thepivot piece can be clamped to extend in any desired direction about the shaft. In the enlarged other end of said joint is a threaded socket 12, into which is screwed a threaded reduced rounded end of a long rod 13, preferably rectangular in On said rod and extending on both sides thereof is a handle 14 adjustably secured on said rod by a thumb screw 16 screwed through a portion of said handle and into one of a longitudinal series of suitably spaced recesses 17 formed in one side of the rod. By means of said screw 16, the handle 14 is thus firmly secured upon the rod, and, in the handle, therefore, the bather finds a very firm and yet adjustable support against slipping and falling when rising from the bath tub.

However, I also use this rod as part of a cleansing device, and, with this in View, upon its'free end is secured, by a thumb screw 18,- an arm 19, rectangular in cross section, and a side of which forms a dove-tailed rib 21. 22 indicates a brush back, having in itsrear surface a dove-tailed groove 23 which is engaged by the dove-tailed rib 21. The brush back-canbe secured in any desired position} back either up or down 01 from side to side and can adjust the position of the brush to vary its distance either from the pivot piece 8 or from the rod 13.
