STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
To all whom it may concern H Be it known that we, JoHN ROGERS FLAN- NNRY and ETHAN I. Dorms, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Stay- Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in .staybolt structures for boilers, and more par ticularly to the closure for the bearing sleeve,-the object of our present invention being to provide simple and eliicient means for removably securing the cap to the sleeve in a manner to permit its quick removal and replacement to facilitate the rapidity of the work of testing staybolts for boilers.
Withthis and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure on the line l-1 of Fig. 3 showing an embodiment of our invention;
is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. i is a view of a modification.
1 represents a bearing sleeve adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and provided interiorly with a curved as a bearing for thehead 3 of staybolt 4:.
The sleeve 1 maybe provided at its outer end with a peripheral flange 5 forming an annular shoulder 6 and within the confines of said flange, a seat 7 is provided for a cap This cap 8 is made partly spherical for the accommodation of the bolt head and its internal dimensions and configuration are such as to provide a suitable clearance space 9 for the head of the staybolt. A portion of the cap is made with an exterior angular configuration for the ac commodation of a wrench, and said cap is provided at or near its edge with a plurality of lateral shoulders 10 (three such shoulders being shown in Fig. 3) adapted to overlie the flange. 5 of the bearing sleeve.
A ring 11 is threaded on the bearing sleeve Figure face 2 which serves,

1 and formed with a shoulder 12 to engage the shoulders 6 on said sleeve to limit the outward movement of said ring. The ring 11 is made with a plurality of jaws 13 (three such aws being shown in Fig. 3) and the lips 14 of said jaws are adapted (when the parts are in locked position) to overlie the shoulders 10 011 the cap.
Instead of providing the cap with three lateral shoulders 10,. it may be formed with two shoulders and the ring 11 made with. two jaws as shown in Fig. 4.
'Ehe locking ring 11 will be screwed on the bearing sleeve before the latter has been applied to the boiler sheet. When the hearing sleeve hasbeen secured to the boiler sheet the cap Wlll be placed in position with the shoulders 12 alternating with the jaws 13 as shown in Fig. 3. The operator will now give the cap a partial turn so as to move the shoulders 12 behind the lips of the jaws 13. He will then turn the ring 11 slightly and thus cause the lips of the jaws to clamp down on the shoulders 12 and securely press the cap against its seat on the bearing sleeve. It is evident that by turning the lockmg ring in the reverse direction, the aws will become released from the shoulders on the cap and when the parts become disposed as shown in Fig. 3, the cap can be lifted off or removed outward from the bearing sleeve and thus expose the head of the staybolt.
With our improvements the cap or closure can be removed very quickly and replaced and locked with equal promptness, and thus access to the staybolt for testing purposes will be greatly facilitated.
aving fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having a cap seat, of a cap having a plurality. of lateral shoulders, and a rin threaded on said sleeve and having a plura ity of jaws to engage over the lateral shoulders of the cap, whereby the cap may be quickly unlocked and removed without removing said ring from the bearing sleeve.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having an annular flange at its outer end, of a cap to seat on the bearing sleeve, said cap having a 1111- specification in the presence v 'ILL subscribrallity g1 laterjzgdtfiheillders toloveglie gihe 2e3- ing' witnesses. r i f nu a1" ange 0 e s eeve, anc a nng uea ed on the sleeve in rear of said annular flangean'd provided with a plui'ality of'jawvs y having lips tO overlie the lateral sh'oiflders Witnesses: J on the cap.
