Description

W. W. WESNER.
I COMBIIIIEQ ELECTRIC LIGHT BRACKET AND SOCKE-T.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.5. l918I Patented Feb. 18, 1919.

WILTON W. WESNER, OF GLOUCESTER CITY, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED ELECTRIC-LIGHT BRACKET AND SOCKET.
I earned Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, Thin.
Application filed August 5, 1918. Serial No. 2%,357.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILTON Vt. WESNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, in tlre'count-y of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Electric-Light Brackets and'Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric light sockets and their coiiperating parts.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap and efficient device of this character, combining a lamp socket and Shade holder detachably con nected. v
Another object is to provide a lamp socket carrying a shade holder which may be supported by a suitable housing.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure lrepresents a vertical section of the device constituting this invention,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section, and
Fig. t is a detail vertical section of a' slightly difi'erent form of connector for attaching the shade holder to the lamp socket.
In the embodiment illustrated, an electric light bulb 1 of ordinary construction is shown. surrounded by an ordinary shade 2 which depends from and is detachably carried by a holder or bracket 3. This holder 3 is made in the form of a flared skirt 4t provided at its peripheral edge with a bushing 5 having a set screw 6 extended therethrough for engaging the upper end of the shade 2 which in connection with the inturned flange 4c operates to hold the shade connected with the bracket. This bracket 3 has arranged within the skirt a and made integral therewith a tubular member 7 with substantially rectilinear side walls which is provided at its lower end with an out turned flange 8. This skirt. 7 has threaded engagement with a non-conductive tiller 9 which is arranged between the connecting and the shade holder 3 the invention resides in the comsocket 10 which will be presently more fully described.
The socket 10 which supports the lamp 1 is internally threaded at its lower end to receive the threaded upper end of the bulb 1 and is exteriorly threaded at its outer end for threaded engagement with the bracket socket 15. This socket 10 has an outturned flange 11 at its lower end spaced from the flange 8 of skirt 7 and between which extends the outturned flange 12 of the filler or insulating member 9. i
The connecting socket 10 which has threaded engagement with the bracket socket 15 thus supports both the lamp 1 and the shade 2, forming a connector between these members and a housing 13. This housing 13 is formed in two detachably connected sections comprising a cap member 11 within which is arranged an insulating supporting member 16 which carriesv the binding posts 17 for the'electric light cords 18 which supply current to the lamp. An insulator 19 is arranged within the socket 10 at its upper end and through which extends the connecting post 20 having a head 21 at its lower end which forms contact with the lamp socket as shown in Fig. 1 for supplying electric current to said lamp. A connection 22 being carried by one of the binding posts 17 and made in the form of a spring finger as is shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The current supply wires 18 extend through openings 23 in the side wall of the housing 13 and may be connected to a suitable current supply outside as shown at 24:.
The bracket socket 15 is provided at its upper end with a laterally extending flange 15 which is secured to the insulating member 16 by the binding posts 17, washers 15 being arranged around said posts and be tween which and said member 16 this flange is clamped, said posts having nuts 17' for holding them in adjusted position.
In the use of this device. the shade supporting bracket 3 is threaded in the insulating member 9 which is carried by the connectingsocket 10. This socket is then threaded into the bracket socket 15 and is ready to receive the lamp 1, the shade 2 having either been first connected with bracket 3 or afterward placed in position thereon and the device is ready for use.
From the above description it will be obvious that this improved socket and bracket ltlli may be quickly assembled and disassembled for use.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 a shade holder 3' is shown having a threaded sleeve 7 which is connected with the threaded light connection 10 by a threaded sleeve 9 of insulating material. The sleeve 9 is first screwed 0n the light connection 10 and then shade holder sleeve 7 screwed on over sleeve 9'.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a lamp receiving socket having means for attaching it to a bracket, and a laterally extending flange at its lower end, an insulating sleeve encircling said socket and supported by said flange, and a lamp shadebracket having threaded engagement with said sleeve and carrying at its upper .end .a depending flared skirt provided with shade engaging means.
2. A device of the class described comprising a lamp receivlng socket having an exteriorly threaded extension, an insulating sleeve encircling the lower portion of said socket and having threaded engagement WILTON W. VVESNER.
