Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ea. 11, 1919.
Application filed November 5, 1914. Serial No. 870,343.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. NEVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVire-Twisters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wire twisters, and more particularly to a device especially adapted for twisting two wires together intermediate their ends While their ends are attached.
Among the salient objects of the invention are,to provide a simple hand tool with which it is possible to pick up two wires lying side by side, at a point intermediate their ends, and to quickly and uniformly twist them together without the necessity of threading or inserting their ends through the twister; to provide in a device of the character referred to a revoluble twisting member with receiving sockets or grooves extending longitudinally of its axis of rotation and inwardly to points at opposite sides of said axis of rotation, the portion of said twisting member between said grooves or socketsforming a twisting prong or tooth adapted to project between the wires; to provide in a device of the character referred to a twisting member of gear-like form, one tooth of which serves both as a gear tooth and a twisting tooth or prong projecting radially outwardly from the axis of said gear; to provide in such a device means for holding the twisting member in convenient position for picking up the wires to be twisted, with means for operating the twisting member, and with means whereby the device can be easily and quickly detached from the twisted wires, and, in general, to provide a simple and economical hand tool with which it is possible to readily pick up two wires lying together at points intermediate their ends, and to twist them together to any degree of tightness desired.
In order that others may thoroughly understand my invention, I have shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, one practical embodiment thereof, which I will now describe. v
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with a small part broken out of one side to expose the twisting member;
Fig. 3 shows the top of a bucket with two Wires adapted for securing the top thereon;
Fig. 4 shows the wires twisted;
Fig. 5 shows the device in a position to pick up the Wires; and
Fig. 6 shows the device in position to be removed from the wires after the twisting operation.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown for purposes of illustration, the body or holding members comprise twoside members 1 and 2, secured together by means of a screw 3, with a spacing block 4 therebetween, and with a handle 5 screwed thereto, substantially as shown. Between the side members 1 and 2 is a gear 6, having shaft bearings in said side members, as indicated, and provided at one side, through said side member 2, with an internally threaded head 7 adapted to have detachably secured thereto an operating crank 8. Mounted between the outer ends of said side members 1 and 2 is a combination gear and twisting member 9, comprising a gear member having two grooves or sockets 9 and 9 formed therein at opposite sides of one of the teeth thereof and extending longitudinally of the axis of said gear, and into the middle thereof, and also extending through the trunnions of the gear, substantially as indicated. Thus one of the teeth of the gear constitutes a combination gear tooth and twisting member, and meshes with the teeth of the gear 6, as do the other teeth of said twisting gear 9. The side members 1 and 2 are cut out at their top edges over the trunnions of the gear member 9, as indicated, so that the wires to be twisted can be laid in said grooves 9* and 9 I have arranged the grooves in the member 9 so that they will automatically be upward when the crank 8 is down, where it will automatically hang by gravity. The crank is perferably provided with a long shank or body portion to reach to the edge of the bucket so that the crank proper will hang down at the side of the bucket as shown in Fig. 5. This figure shows the position of the device when attached ready to operate. In Fig. 6 the device is shown in the position for easy removal, the handle 5 being thrown over to the opposite side and the crank being in the raised position; and the grooves are all downward, so that it is only necessary to take hold of the crank handle and roll the body of the device over sidewise and the twisting member is with drawn from the wires.
I am aware that changes can be made in the device as here shown for illustrative purposes Without departing from the spirit of the invention; and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the details here shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claim.
What I claim is,-
A wire twisting hand-tool for twisting two spaced wires together, comprising two spaced side members provided near their outer ends with registering bearing opening-s, opening upwardly-through the upper edges ofsaid sidemembers, a gear having its hub portions seated in said bearing openings and provided :at opposite sides of one connected with -said.operating gear and operating by gravity to normally turn said grooved gear into a position whereby its grooves register with the openings in said side members, substantially as described.
