Description

MORRIS IVIENKUS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed April l, 1918. Serial No. 226,077.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MORRIS MENKUS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in rI`oys, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to a top spinning device.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a holder by which the top, while spinning, may be supported and carried about on the holder as well as to afford a support for the top preparatory to and while being spun so as to accomplish this with ease and certainty. Another object of the invention is to provide a holder which ermits the top, while spinning, to be ropped to the floor and picked up and balanced on the holder whenever desired. The device as a whole is exceedingly simple, inexpensive and capable of affording keen. amusement for children. Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the top mounted in the holder ready for spinning.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the top spinning on the surface of the holder.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A. indicates in general a holder provided with a handle 2 and a shovel'or scoop-shaped surface 3. Formed in said surface, near the handle 2, is a perforation 4 which is suiiciently large to receive an upwardly extending spindle or extension 5 formed on a top 6. The outer edge of the holder, particularly the portion 3, is provided with an upwardly bent edge 7 to prevent the top, when spinning on the surface 3, from running olf the sides and the forward edge 8 is sharpened to permit the top to be scooped up from the floor while spinning.
In actual operation, when it is desired to spin the top, it is only necessary to insert the spindle 5 through the perforation t so that the top assumes the position shown in Fig. l. A cord 9 is then wound about the spindle. The holder is then grasped by the handle with one hand, while the cord is pulled by the other hand. Rotary motion is thus imparted to the top and the moment it is released by the cord it will drop from the opening 4 down to the floor or table surface where it may spin. It may readily be scooped up on the surface 3, where, if it is properly balanced, it is possible to retain it while spinning. It may, of course, be dropped to the floor and again picked up until the top loses its momentum and stops spinning.
The device is exceedingly simple and easily operated, and it therefore affords a source of keen amusement for children, keeping them occupied and interested.
The shape of the top and the material from which it may be constructed may be varied as may also the construction of the holder A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a top having an upwardly projecting spindle, a substantially shovel-shaped handled holder havinga perforation, said perforation being formed to receive the spindle so that the latter will project above the top surface of the holder and being arranged in proximity to the inner end of the handle and scoop so that one end of the cord can be placed on said top surface of the holder and held thereon while the other end of the cord is wound around the spindle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
