Description

`.mains BRADLEYLAW, or DARLINGTON, soUTH CAROLINA.
RAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. d, 1919.
Application filed October 15, 1918. Serial N o. 258,179.
To all whom t mag/concern:`` j
Be it known that I, JrlMEs BRADLEY LAW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Darlington, in the county of Darlington and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Haines, of whichthe following is a specification. 1
Mypresent invention relates generally to hames, and more particularly to hames of the nature shown yin Patents #241,67 6, and #249,641, respectively dated, May 17, 1881, and November 15, 1881, the object of my present improvements being to simplify and better certain of the hame connections so as to adapt the same to present day needs and promote the useof an article of this nature, ordinarily used as a collar and made principally of wood, whereby to conserve both metal and leather, of which the ordinary collars are manufactured.
In particular, my present improvements aim at the betterment of the connection between the upper ends of the hames, as well as the manner of securing the draft hook and breast ring thereto, so that ready and easy assembling of the parts will be lpromoted and all danger of accidental displacement and loss in use, will be avoided.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of hames constructed in accordance with my present invention,
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a cross section through one of the hames and taken substantially on lines 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the pair of hames seen in Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a detail section taken substantially on line 5 5 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the buckle to be hereinafter described.
Referring now to these figures, the hame as proposed with my invention is formed for the major part ofwood, the connections between pairs of hames as ywell as the connections providing for the attachment of harness, being the exceptions. In Fig. 1, 1n which a pair of hames 10 are seen in front elevation, it will be noted that the lower ends being heavy and of greater width than the upper ends, may be well calculated to sustain openings 1l for the reception of a sultable fastening strap and the like 12. The
upper ends being smaller and lighter, are
perforated in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of each hame, parallel with the front flat face thereof seen in Fig. l, `and through these perforations bolts 12 are extended, having inner'eyes 134 which are in turn united by links 14, extending through the eyes 18, and the strap 15, having its ends projecting in the `same direction through thelinks 14,`with its ends projecting through a rectangular' buckle 16 having rigid prongs extending inwardly and inclined upwardly from its opposite sides as seen in the detail Fig. 6.
The opposite or rear sides or faces of the hames 10 are rounded and'shaped as indicated in Figs. 2 andt, so that bearing as they do against the animals neck and shoulders, there will be no rough edges to cause abrasions and collar sores.
` The draft hook 17 and breast ring 18 of each hame are disposed somewhat in the same manner as in my patents above referred to, although in my present application I provide for rigid grip and anchoring of the staple supporting these parts, by means of a one-piece' clamp the structure and disposition of which affords a secure connection. The staple 19 of the present application is, as in my patents above referred to, L-shaped with a threaded shank firmly screwed into the material of the collar, and with its free extension projecting upwardly parallel to the flat front face of the collar, and my present improvements include a staple clamp 20 of each hame having a central perforation for the reception of the free end of the staple, with laterally projecting apertured ears to receive clamping screws 21, and, as particularly seen in Fig. 5, the inner face of this clamp 20 is inclined slightly with respect to the axis of its staple receiving aperture so that when the clamp is secured firmly against the flat, front face of the hame, by means of the screws 21, it will be slightly canted with respect to the free portion of the staple 19 and will thus bind with the latter and grip the same so as to avoid all danger of movement and loosing thereof, as well as to brace and lend rigidity and strength to the same.
The improvements to the hames of my foregoing patents will adapt the same to present day needs and will provide a hame and attachments therefor of a simple construction which can be easily assembled together and which can be manufactured at a minimum cost.
As the hames are of major part constructed of wood they are adapted for use at the present time owing to the saving ef'- fected of leather and metal of which haines and collars now in use are generally con structed.
It is obvious that when the staple 19 becomes worn itis simply necessary to release the screws 2l and remove the clamp 20, after which the worn staple ring or trace hook may be replaced by new ones, and the cla-mp 20 again screwed in connection with the haine `and in gripping relation with the staple.
I claim:
l. A hame having a draft hook and a breast ring, an I --shaped staple one portion of which screws into the hame and the other portion of which upstands parallel to one face of the haine for the reception of the draft hook and breast ring, and a one-piece clamp having a iiat face disposed in `engagement with one face of the haine, and provided with an opening therethrough to receive the extremity' of the upstanding Copies of this patent may be obtained for portion of the staple, Yand means for securing the said clamp to the haine, said at hame engaging tace of the clamp being inclined with respect to the aXis of its staple receiving opening whereby to cant the clamp 'on the staple when secured to the hame and bind the clamp in gripping rel-ation with the staple.
2. A hame having 'a draft hook and breast ring and an L-shaped staple one portion of which screws into the hame, and the other portion of which upstands parallel to vone face of the haine for'the reception of the breast ring and draft hook, and a one-piece clamp having an Vopening therethrough to receive the extremity of the said upstanding portion of the staple and provided with apertures, and fastening members extending through the said apertures for connecting the said member securely upon` the haines, the inner hame engaging face of the clamp member being inclined with respect to the axis of its staple receiving opening whereby to cant the member when 'secured to the hame and bind the same in gripping relation with the staple. y
