Description

C. E. REDFIELD.

APPLICATION FILED AUG. 12, 1914.
INVENTOR 01 7/74 5 [Di a/752g WITNESSES M624 WMZ% ATTORNEYS cHARLEsEDMoND REDF 'ELD, or MILES, WASHINGTON.
NEoK-YoKE ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Rnormm), a citizen of the United States, residing at Miles, in the county of Lincoln and State of Washington, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Yoke Attachments, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved neck yoke attachment or center.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improved center whereby the neck yoke may be positioned in advance of the vehicle tongue, in order'that the reins may not become entangled or engaged under the end of the tongue.
Another object of the invention is to provide a neck yoke attachment in the form of a strong connection between the yoke and the vehicle tongue, this connection adapted to allow movementpf the yoke incident to the movement of the draft animals.
Still'another object is to provide a neck yoke attachment or center including a socket adapted to engage the end of the vehicle tongue, said socket carrying arms adapted to be secured to a collar disposed on the neck yoke and clamping the same, said arms being disposed on opposite sides of the yoke and having a pivotal connection therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be simple, durable, eflicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction,l combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of .which Figure 1 represents a plan view of the attachment showing the same in place upon the neck yoke and tongue of a vehicle. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view taken transversely of the vehicle tongue on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view taken transversely of the neck yoke on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the vehicle tongue is indicated at 5 and the neck yoke at 6. The latter is preferably composed of a bar of wood formed with a pair of integral spaced collars 7 at its en- Specification of Letters Patent.
' gaged by desirable construction.

tral portion. A structure equivalent to the have the yoke recessed annularly at its central portion, or acombination of the collars and the recessed portion might be preferred. The object is to provide an anchorage for a sleeve indicated at 8. This sleeve is split longitudinally as at 9, and is sprung upon the yoke between the collars or in the recess portion, as the case may be. A socket 10 is provided, and is adapted to fit onto the outer end of the vehicle tongue 5. Secured to the socket on opposite sides thereof, are a pair of arms or prongs 11 which are riveted as at 12 at their inner ends to the socket. inner ends of the prongs are transversely curved, to conform to the curvature of the socket, as indicated in Fig. 2. The outer ends 13 of the prongs are offset in opposite directions and engage the sleeve 8 on opposite sides of the neck yoke. The prongs may be made of spring material so that their outer ends will snugly and tightly bear against the sleeve. A bolt 14 extends through the outer ends of the prongs,
through the sleeve, and the yoke, and provides a pivot on which the yoke swings back and forth, at the same time acting as a connection between the yoke and the arms.
One of the arms or prongs is provided at its rear end with a hook 15. An arcuate lug 16 provided on the vehicle tongue near the other end thereof is adapted to be enhook 15, whereby to prevent accidental disengagement of the socket from the vehicle tongue. v
The neck yoke attachment constructed according to my invention, will be found to be extremely efficient, and easy to install, and without the use of special tools. An extremely strong construction is also provided by the device, it being noted that the arms act as two points of connection between the center of the yoke and the vehicle tongue. These arms serve to brace the neck yoke in a very efficient manner, at the same time allowing of the swinging movement of the yoke through the center thereof, which is a This arrangement allows of the use of a wooden neck yoke, which in many instances is preferred to a metallic one.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof as not from the spirit ofthe and prongs 11 cast in one piece, being fastened together by the rivets l2. 7 N. Iclaim: Y The combination with a neck yoke and a vehicle tongue, of a split resilient sleeve'arranged ,upon the yoke, a socket into which the tongue at one end projects, detachably connecting the tongue and socket,

means for V resilient arms socket and engaging over theresilient sleeve upon opposite sides and" compressing said sleeve between them, and a pin. extending diametril3 cally through the yoke and sleeve and through said arms.
