To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS Fox, a subject of the King of England, residing at Belfast, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Holders, of 'which the following is a specification.

This inventionA relates to tobacco, and more especially to a cigar and cigarette holder; and the object of the same is t0 insert a strainer or filter in the cigarette holder between the mouth piece and the cavity for receiving the cigarette. It is well known that .the tobacco used in most cigarettes contains lmore or less of the oils which are objectionable and injurious to the human system, and

this will be proven if the smoker blows some of the smokey through a handkerchief. I

propose to u se a filter or cleanser composed of linen, mounted within the cigarette holder so that the smoke as drawn into the mouth must pass through the same and therefore be' cleansed or filtered before it reaches the -mouth of the smoker.

The heat and ,moisture softens the band l1 of mucilage, so that it is impossible for anything to get around the edge of the disk, even if the two parts of the device should slipa little out of their proper position as shown in Fig, 1. The oil of tobacco and other injurious andcolorable substances which smoke contains are thus taken up by the fabric filter and retained, 'being strained out of the smoke so 'that they do not reach the mouth of the user.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to' what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It' is to be understood that I Amay make such changes in constructiony and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient .and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
