SAFETY DOOR-FASTENER.
Application filed January 19, 1918'.
' a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door fasteners and aims to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be conveniently carried about and quickly secured in position to prevent unauthorized opening of a door.
To this end the invention consists of a bar adapted to be placed across the stile of the door and the frame thereof, the said bar carrying adjusting means engageable with the door stile and also carrying at one end an eccentrically pivoted member engageable with the door frame, the said member carrying an arm which has secured thereto a flexible element which is engageable with a hook or pin carried by the bar to hold the eccentrically pivoted member against movement.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a portion of a door and its jamb or frame with the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and- Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the invention detached from the door.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the stile of the door to which the lock is applied is indi cated at 10, While a portion of the door panel is shown at 11 the adjacent frame or jamb being shown at 12.
The fastener which is adapted to be removably secured to the door and jamb includes a bar 13, preferably formed of steel and of substantially rectangular shape in cross section. This bar is adapted to be placed across the meeting edge of the door and jamb and is of suflicient length to extend beyond the side edges of both the stile 10 and the jamb 12. It may be placed at any convenient point throughout the length of the door and is secured in position by means of an adjustable clamping block 14 and an eccentric 15.
The clamping block 14 is provided with a rectangular opening 16 of a size to permit of its having a free sliding movement Specification of Letters Patent.

upon the bar 13 and is adapted to be held in I position upon the latter through the medium of a set screw 17, which engages a threaded opening 18 in the block la and is provided with an angular extremity or operating handle 19. The block 14: is adapted to be adjusted near one end of the bar 13 for position against the shoulder provided uponthe stile 10 at its juncture with the panel 11.
The opposite end of the bar 13 has eccentrically pivoted thereon as shown at 20 a member 15, which is adapted to be brought nto engagement with the side edge of the jam 12 to securely clamp the said bar in position. The member 15 is in the form of an eccentrically pivoted disk and is provided with an arm 21, which carries at its extremity a ring 22. This ring has connected thereto one end of a chain 23, which when the member 15 is adjusted in position is adapted to have its opposite end engaged over a hook or pin 24 located at the opposite end of the bar 13. This will securely hold the member 15 in position, while the pin or hook 24 will prevent the disengagement of the block 14: from the bar 13 when the device is not in use, so that the parts cannot become separated and lost.
For the purpose of preventing injury of the side edge of the jamb 12, there is provideda protecting strip 25, which is secured to the arm 21 through the medium of the ring 22 and. a chain or cord 26. The strip 25 is preferably wedge shape in cross section and is adapted to be positioned between the-eccentrically pivoted member 15 and the jamb 12 as stated. 7
In positioning the device, the block 14 is adjusted from the end of the bar which carries the member 15 a distance approximate to the combined width of the stile 10 and jamb 12. The blocking strip 25 is then positioned against the edge of the jamb with the thickest edge of said strip against the bar 13. clamp the bar in position and the chain 23 is engaged through the hook or pin 24, so that the accidental loosing of the device will not occur.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A door fastener embodying a bar adapted to be positioned across the door frame and stile of the door, pivoted means carried by one end of the bar for engagement with the frame, means also carried by The member 15 is then rotated to 2 i 1 ,2ss,sos
the bar for engagement With'the stile of the door and means secured to pivoted means and engageable With the bar for preventing the accidental disengagement of the device.
2. A door fastener embodying a bar adapted to be positioned across the door frame and stile of the door, an eccentrically pivoted clamping element located at one end of the bar, means also carried by the bar for engagement With the stile of the door and a 10 flexible member carried by the eccentrically pivoted clamping element and engageable With the bar for holding the former against movement in one direction.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 15
