Description

Patented Nov. 11, 1930 ears.
JOHN H. PINEO, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS noon FASTENER Application filed July 15, 1929;. Serial No 378,218.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in door-fasteners and has for its object-to-provide a fastening device which may be employed upon doors, certain types of windows 8 and other objects where it is desired to lock a movable member to a stationary member.
Another object of theinvention is to pro vide a fastening device particularly adapted to be employed in looking a door to a door casing, the device being placed against the striker plate which is fast to the door casing and projecting therethrough into either of the recessesin the casing provided for the door latch or the locking bolt, and after the door has been closed, a positioning member is manipulated to hold the device normal to the door casing and a clamping member is manipulated to engage the door, after which the positioning member and clamping member are securely clamped together. Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive device which may be used effectively upon doors of different thicknesses and in connection with different styles and types of door casings without it beeither the casing or the door.
The invention consists in a fastening devic for doors and the like as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a portion of a door casing and door illustrating a fastening device embodying my invention fastened to the casing, and holding the door in locked position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the fastening device and door casing, the door being illustrated in section and in locked position; 7
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the fastening device, the positioning member and clamping member being illustrated in the positions they assume when the device isbeing applied to the door casing.
Fig. 41s an edge view of the positioning member.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
-In the drawings, 5 represents a portion of a V doorcasing,6 a portion of a door, 7 a striker plate which is fastened in a well known man-f ner to the door casing, and 8 is a recess in the door casing behind the striker plate, and said recess maybe either the recess that is provided to receive the door latch, or that provided'to receive the bolt for the usual door'lock.
The fastening device of this invention embodies therein a catch 9 which consists of afiat plate 10 havinga laterally projecting portion 11 rigidly secured thereto. The plate 10 is of sufficientthickness'to be comparatively rigid, yet capable of being located-within a space 12 that is usually provided-when the door is closed between the edge of the door and the door jamb. p 1
vPivotally mounted upon one side of the plate 10upon a bolt13 is a positioning mem-V ber 14 which'is segmental inform and is pro.- vided with a peripheralportion 15 which is eccentric to the axis of the bolt 13, and afterz the device has been applied tothe door casing and the door has been closed, the positioning member is rotated upon the pivot or bolt 13 until some portion of the peripheral portion 15-engagesthe side of the door casing. The action' of the positioning member 14'is to hold the plate 10 normalto'the side'of the door casing. I V i l Pivotally attached to the plate 1O upon the oppositeside thereof from the positioning member 14 is a clamping member 16, the bolt 1'3 constituting'theipivot therefor. jThe gen eral outlinefofthe-clamping member 16 is I the same as that of the ositioning member 14 and theclampingmem er is providediwith a r versed upontheir respective sides of the peripheral portion 17 which is eccentrically disposed with relation to the axis of the pivot '13. The positions, however, of the positioning member '14- andclamping member-16am platelO and the peripheral portion of the member 14 is so formed that the member 14 is preferably rotated inthe direction of the arrow a, Fig.3, when it is moved into envgagement with the door casing, while the peripheral portion 17 of the member 16' is so formedwith relation to the axis 13 thereof that said member 16 is preferably moved in the direction of the arrow b'when it is moved into engagement with the door 6.
In nearly all instances when-the device has been applied to the door casing and the mem 1 here '14 and 16have'been moved into engage ment with the door casing anddoor respec,
tively, the peripheral portion 15"of the mein ber 14c will contact with the door casing at a pointabovea horizontal plane passing .5 r the horizontal i plane passing through the through the pivot 13, while; the peripheral portion 17 of thefmember 16 will" contact with the face of the door '6at a point below- The positioning member l i and" clamping member 16 arefinally clamped to the opposite sides of the plate 10 by a thumb nut 18 which has screw-threaded engagement with the bolt 13. v
The portion at one side of the positioning member 14 is cutaway at 19 to prevent the contact of the positioning member with the striker plate '7 and a portion of the opposite side of said positioningmember is berelled at 520xt0contact withannolding strip which is 7 provided in certain-instances as a portion of the door casing, thepositioning member being rotated until said bevelled' portion is wedge'd.;.against the edge of the door casing. In attaching the device to the door casing,
;of'engagesthe side ofthe door casing. VThe tion of the arrow 7) until the peripheral portion 17 thereof is'broughtintocontact with V j the" face ofithe door 6, after which the posihand;
attached to the catch and provided with it peripheral portion eccentric to the axis thereof and adaptedto engage the casing and hold the catchnormal thereto, a clamping member of'the same general contour as the positioning member and also pivotally at,- tached to thecatch and provided-with a peripheral portion eccentric to the axis thereof and reversely positioned with respect to the peripheral portion of th e'p ositioning member-and adapted-to engage a door and pre q vent the latter from moving relatively tothe "casing; and means to clamp the positioning member and clamping member to'the catch 2. A fastening device for doors and the likehaving, in combination, a" plate adapted to be inserted between a door casingand a door,fa projection 'fastto said plateand adapted tovbe inserted in alrecessprovided in i the casing, aQposition-ing member 'pivotally attachedto the plate on one side thereof: and provided with a peripheral portion eccentric .to the axis thereof and adapted to engage the casing and hold the plate normal thereto, a
clamping member. also 'pivotally attached to the plate upon the other side thereof and pro-w vided with: a, peripheral portion eccentric ,to a the axis thereof and adapted to engage the door andprevent the latter from moving relatively tothecasing, andm'eans to clamp the positioning member and clamping member to the plate. v In testimony i, f .JOHNHQ r NEo.
