IDW-B A''YOKE CNNECTION.
i Connections, of which the following is a full,
' arms 13 and 14, integral clear, concise,- and exact description, roten. ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication. 4 This invention relates to improvements in draw bar and yoke connections. f
One object of my invention is to a detachable draw bar and yoke connection so arranged that old yoke straps ofithe rivbe remployed withL conseroads. 1
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide -a detachable connecemployed a hollow head for receiving the draw bar butt, a yoke strap, removable pins for connecting the head, draw bar and strap, and means for placing the pins under double shear to thereby ,increase the strength 'ot the connection.
Inthe drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a draw bar'and yoke showing my improvements in connection' 1therewith. Fig. 251s a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal, vertical, sectional view illustrating another embodiment of the invention. And Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a portion of the arrangement shown in Fig. ai.
Referring to the arrangement/shown in Figs. 1,2 and 3, A denotes'afstandard draw bar; B a wrought-iron U-shaped yoke strap voi? the usual riveted type; C a hollow rectangular cast head or hood; D--D connecting pins; and E a short coupler key.
The draw bar A is of the standard type v having the usual pair of rivet receiving holes 10-'10, upper and lower shoulders 11,-11,`and in this instance, coupler kei` slot 12.
The vokexB, as
u above indicated, is of the old riveted type,
having upper and lower rear connecting porition 15, and filler 16. At the forward ends,
`the) arms 13 and 14 of said yoke B are also Spcification of Letters Patent.

The pins Dinay "beheld from accidental disengagementby anyfsuitable means, such'as-thecotters25." i1 i i Vf ith thearrangeinei'it above des'c'i'ibd,it is obvious `that A l I obtain a1 fdetacha'hle' con-x nect'ion between the diawfbarand yokewith'- out modiication of either. In addition, by employing the coupler key E, the pins D are placed in double shear at both top and bottom, due to the :tact that movements ot the draw barare communicated to the head C through the key E, as will be understood.
ln the construction illustrated in Figs, l and, 5, the draw bar A is of that standard type not having a coupler key slot, oi" which there are many 'thousands now in service. It is however provided with the usual standardly spaced rivet receiving holes 11G-110 and the usual upper and lower shoulders 1113-111. The strap B is, or may be, the same as that shown in the other figures. l rEhe head or hood Cis of hollow rectangulariorination having upper and lower walls 118 and 119 and side walls-120-1Q0. The Yupper and lower walls of tli'e head and the i'rward ends of the yoke arms are provided with alined holes or perforations so that when the parts are properly assembled pins D--D may be ,inserted therethrough the same as in thezother construction.
loof In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4: and 5, to obtain the double shear effect on the pins D-D, I employ. two transversely eX- tending keys E-E. As clearly shown in Fig. 5, these keys E inner faces, as indicated at 30, so as to fit over the shoulders 111-111 of the draw bar vbutt and the side walls of the head C are suitably slotted to accommodate :the ends of said keys E when located in alinement with. the upper and lower shoulde-rs of: the draw bar butt.
In assembling the structure shown in Fi Us. 4l and 5, the head C is first slipped over the draw bar butt and the keys E-E placed in position. The head C is then moved rearwardly until. the draw bar shoulders llllll engage in the recesses 30 of the keys E which will hold said keys E -in proper position against laterall movement. The ends of the yoke strap are then inserted and finally the pins D applied whereupon all the parts are locked in operative posii-I tion. In this construction it will be noted 'that the pins D are also under double shear due to the fact |that there is shouldered engagement between the draw 'bar and the head C under dra-ft. I
t Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred method of carrying out my invention, I do not intend to Ibe limited thereb but contemplate all changes and modi cations that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
l. In a device of the the combination with a standard draw bar and a yoke strap, of a hollow head within which the draw bar 'butt and the forward character described,
are notched on theirl connecting the draw bar,
ends of the strap arms are received, said arms being disposed between the walls of the head and the draw bar butt and all of said members having alined holes, pins eX- tending within said holes for detachably head and strap, operatively conbar under draft place said pins under double and additional means for necting the head and draw to thereby shear.
2. In a deviceof the character described. the combination with a standard draw bar and a yoke strap, of a hollow head within which the draw bar butt and the forward ends of the strap arms are received, said head, draw har and strap arms having alined holes, pins extending within said holes, and additional means for operatively connecting the draw bar andA head under draft, said means including a transverse key having shouldered engagement with both the head and the draw har, one of said pins engaging said key and .preventing transverse movement thereof.
3. In a device of the character described, the'combination with a standard draw bar and a U-shaped yoke strap, of a hollow hood within which the forward ends of the arms of the strap and the draw bar but-t are received, all of said members\having alined holes, pins eX-tending through said holes, the side walls of said head and the draw bar being slotted, and a transverse key eX- tending through said slots for effecting connection between the draw bar and head.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 29th i JOHN F. ocoNNoR.
