Application filed August 16, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY I. VRZGLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear Yokes, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to that type of draft yokes which forms the subject of an appli cation for Letters Patent by Bernie J. Bernharl, Serial No. 774,628, filed June 19, 1918, one of the objects of the invention being t provide for the interlocking of the couplerengaging or filler block with the yoke in such manner as to resist the tendency of the block to turn or tilt upwardly at its rearward end under pulling stresses; another object being to secure a wedging action for forcing the butt of the coupler into engagement with the top of the yoke socket. These objects are attained by the construction here-- inafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of the yoke and coupler, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section;
' Fig. 3 is a perspective of the filler block;
and Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section showing the parts in process of assembling.
The body of the yoke may be of the conventional M. C. B. type, as shown having the top and bottomlongitudinal members 10, 11, and a suitable rear end 12. The for ward end of the upper member of the yoke is offset downwardly to form a shoulder 13 for engagement by the shoulder 14 on the upper side of the butt of the coupler 15. The lower member 11 of the yoke is offset downwardly, as shown at 16, the offset occurring back of the plane of the rear end of the coupler butt when the latter is in its normal position within the yoke. Side plates 17, 18, unite the forward ends of the top and bottom members of the yoke.
The filler block 19 fits within the head of the yoke, being-seated upon the downwardly ofl'set portion .16 of its lower member and bearing upon its upper face, which is preferably in line with the upper face of the lower yoke member,.the butt of the coupler. At its forward end the filler block is pro- Specification of Letters Patent;

vided with a backwardly facing upstanding shoulder 20 for engaging the lower shoulder of the coupler butt.
The shoulder 21 formed by the downward offset of thelower member of the yoke is transversely recessed, as shown at 22, and the inner end of the tiller block 19 is provided with a toe 23 for entering this 7: ess. Key apertures are formed in the side w; 17, 18, and in the filler block 10 to receive a key 2% which holds the filler block in place and transmits pulling stresses from thecoupler to the lower member of the yc e T key 24 is preferably headed at one apertured at the opposite end tr cotter pin 25.
1 p 1 a The upper face or the oiiset portion ii er '1,
the lower yoke member is preferably sligl inclined downwardly, as shown, tows forward end; and the lower face of an is correspondingly inclined. its the blocs forced to its seat it therefore wedges the be t1; 2
into line with the key apertures in the side plates 17, 18, and wedging the coupler butt upwardly. The key now being inserted, the parts are securely locked together. Pulling stresses applied to the shoulder 20 of the filler block are communicated to the yoke through the key 24. As the shoulder is above the key there is a tendency to turn the filler block about the key as a pivot. This tendency is resisted by the forward end of the downwardly offset portion 16 of the lower yoke member, and also by the engagement of the toe 23 within the recess 22. An orifice 26 is formed at the inner end of the recess 22 for the convenient insertion of a tool for .the purpose of driving the'block l9 fronritsseat; preferably, however, the toe 23 is provided with an extension 27 which projects through this aperture, and upon which a hammer may be used for dislodging the block. For the purpose of avoiding excessive weight the filler block 19 may be re cessed, as shown in Fig. 3, eliminating metal not required to insure adequate strength.
I claim as my invention.
