To all it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Crmxms E. pews, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and larly adapted to make a substantially straight face cut.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertlcal sectional view of the machine;

Referring now to the drawings, I have showna main frame 1 mounted upon wheels view showing parts throughi 2, said wheels adapted to run upon rails 3.
A moving frame 4 .is mounted upon the main frame. The moving frame 4 and the main frame 1 are pivotally connected to.- gether, at one end by the pin 4. Upon this moving frame is mounted a motor 5, which drives a gear 6. The gear 6 is loosely mounted on a connecting piece 7 into which projectthe ends of. the shafts 8 and 9, said shafts being separately rotatable. (See Fig. 1). The gear 6 is provided on opposite sides with the clutch members 10 and 11', which engage with the movable clutchmemhers 12 and 13. The shaft 9 is provided with a worm 14, which drives a shaft15. through the worm wheel 16. This Shaft carries a drum 17 fora cable 18. The shaft 8 is provided with a worm 19, which drives a shaft 20 by means of a worm wheel 21. The shaft 20 is provided with a bevel gear 22, which engages a bevel gear 23 on a shaft 24. In the construction shown (see Fi 6, 7 and 8) the cutter arm is provided with two sections 53 and 54. These sections are flexibly hinged together, the hinge being near the machine so. that it does not enter the cut in the coal. Any suitable flexible joint may be used. As herein shown, the section 54 is provided with a hinge member 55 having a hole therethrough, and the section 53 is provided with the two cotiperating hinge members 56 and a pin 57 passed through these two members. hinge parts are arranged so that they do not The pin and project into the guideway for the cutter chain. Attached to the sections 53 and 54: are the upstanding brackets 59 and 60. A pin 61 connects these brackets and is provided with the coil springs 62 and 63, the whole being arranged so that the section 53 may be moved up or down with relation to the section 5a provided said latter section is held. The springs may be adjusted by the adjusting nuts 64 and 64 Tn operating the device, the entire machine is moved up to the face of the coal and the cutting arm moved to engage the coal at the point where it is to be forced therein. The cable 18 is then connected to a fixed point 18 in front of the machine and the drum 17 rotated, thus causing the entire machine to be moved forward. During this process the cutter chain is operated by the motor 44. When the cutter arm has been projected into the coal the proper-distance, the drum 1? is stopped and the clutch 'member 12 moved to connect the motor 5 with the shafts 8 and 20. The rotation of the shaft 20 causes a rotation of the shaft 24, and the gear :15, thereby causing the mov in frame at to be moved about its pivotal point P. At the same time the gear 27 en gages the teeth 28 so as to move the connecting piece 29 about its pivotal point 30, said. connecting piece, through the agency of the connecting pin 32, carrying with it the supporting frame 33 which carries the cutting element, This produces both a lateral and longitudinal movement of the supporting frame, due to the fact that the supporting frame is pivoted to the moving frame by the pivot 36. The two frames 33 and t move relatively during this operation, both later-- ally and longitudinally, and the longitudinal relative movement is taken care of by the slot 35, the pin 36 moving along said slot. This combined movement causes the end of the cutter arm, after it has once been forced into the coal, to be moved across the coal so as to make a substantially straight faced cut, as shown in Fig. 4 When the machine reaches the position illus trated in Fig. 4:, the motor 5 is disconnected from the shaft :20. The cable 18 is then placed on the other side of the machine, as shown in Fig. 4;, and connected to, a fixed point 18 at the rear of the machine. The motor is then connected with the drum 17 and the operation of said drum causes the entire machine to be moved back sofas to withdraw the cutter arm and finish the cut, the chain of the cutter arm being in operation during this movement. The supporting frame 33 is provided with the guide wheels 33 for the cable 18.
I have described in detail a particular construction embodying the invention, but it is of course evident that the parts may be varied in many particulars; and I therefore moving frame, said pivot nasaesc do not limit myself to the particular construction shown.
I claim:
1.. A mining machine comprising a main frame, a moving frame pivotally connected with said main frame, means for moving said movingframe about its pivotal connectiori, a supporting frame carriedby said moving frame, a connecting piece, two separated pivots connected to said connect ing piece, one of said pivots connecting the connecting piece with the supporting frame, the other pivot connecting said connecting piece with the main frame, and means for moving said connecting piece so as to move one end of said supportin frame, means for moving the other'end o the supporting frame in the opposite direction, whereby said supporting frame is moved both longitudinally and laterally with relation to the moving frame while the moving frame is in motion, and a cutting element connected .with said supporting frame.

A mining machine comprising a main frame, a moving frame pivotally connected with said main frame adapted to bemoved about said pivotal connection, a supporting frame pivotally connected with the moving frame, and adapted to be moved about its pivotal connection, a supporting frame, a connection between the moving frame and the sup-' porting frame comprising a pivot connected with one of said frames and working in a slot in the otherv frame, an intermediate connecting piece pivoted-to the main frame and having a pivoted supporting frame, means moving the moving frame and intermediate connecting piece so as to move the supporting frame and a cutting device on said supporting frame.
4. A. mining machine comprising a main frame, a. moving frame mounted thereon, a pivot connecting the moving frame with the main frame, a supporting frame, a pivot connecting the supporting frame and the free to move 1onfor simultaneously gitudinally with relation to said supporting frame, driving connections at both ends of said supporting frame for moving said ends in opposite directions, and a cutting element connected with said supporting frame.
