in this construction there is provided a main frame lprefera bly mounted on wheels 2 running upon rails 3 media supporting frame i mounted upon the-main frame. A pivot 5. connects'the supporting frame and th main frame together, said pivothaving a. sliding connection with the main frame 1, said pivot sliding in the guideway 6. There is a second pivot 7 connecting the suppoiting frame and the main frame.
This second pivot also slides in a guideway 8 in the main frame. This guidewz-ty is provided .w'ith two angular portions 9 and 10 c0nnectlb litggfthcr at their ends so as to form a continuous angular guideway. The guideway 6 itwill be noted extends longitudinally of the main frame, while the guideway 8 extends across the main frame and has two angular or inclined branches. Mounted on the supporting frame are upwardly projecting guides 11 provided with racks 12. A cutting element 13 is mounted between these racks. This cutting element is provided with shafts 14; extending along the sides thereof having pinions 15 which enga e said racks. the worm 20, the worm wheel 21, the shaft 22, the worm wheel 23 and the worms 24, said worm wheels located on the shafts 14.
It will be' seen that when the pinions 15 are rotated, the cutting element may be moved up or down between said guides. Mounted on the cuttin element is a'drum 25 which is connected with the shaft 26. The shaft 26 is provided with the worm wheel 27 which engages the worm 28 on the shaft 29. The shaft 29 is driven by an angle gear 30 on a sleeve 22 loose on the shaft 22. The gear 21 on the sleeve 22 is connected with the shaft 22 by means of the clutches 31 (see Fig. The shaft 29 which drives the drum 25 is driven'from the angl gear 30 on the sleeve 21. This angle gear connects with an angle gear loosely mounted on the shaft 29 having a hub 29 which forms a clutch member. A clutch member 32 is feathered to the shaft 29 and is controlled by the handle 32*. When the two clutch members are brought together the shaft and drum are rotated. The shaft 19 which drives the shaft 22 is conne ted and disconnected from the motor by means of theclutch 33 controlled by the handle 33*. The drum 25 is provided with a flexible cable 34 which passes around the direction-changing pulleys 35 on the cutting element. The cutting element is provided with. the cutter arm 36 which is provided with the usual cutter chain driven from the motor through the sprocket wheel 37.
When it is desired to operate the device, the entire machine is moved up to the face of the coal and the end of the cutter arm' placed at the point where it is desired to have it enter the coal. The cable 31 is then connected with a fixed part ahead of the machine and the drum 25 rotated, which causes the entire machine to move forward so as to force the cutter arm into the coal the proper distance, the cutter chain being in operation at this time. The cable 34 is then connected to a fixed part 38 (see Fig. 2) at one side of the machine and the drum 25 rotated. This causes the supporting frame to be moved both laterally and longitudinally with relation to the main frame, the pivot 7 sliding in the angular guideway 8 and the pivot 5 sliding in the straight guideway 6. This movement causes the cutter arm 'to move across the face of the coal so as to provide a substantially straight-faced out as shown in Fig. 2, When the end of the cutter arm reaches the limit of the cut it is desired to make, the cable 34: is then connected to a fixed device at the rear of the machine and the entire machine moved rearwardly, the cutter chain being in operation at this time so as to cut out the triangular portion shown in Fig.2: In making the cut through the coal, at large amount of dust 1s produced, which is pulled out by the chaln at the side where it is withdrawn from the cut. This dust is very objectionable and I have illustrated in the present case means for doing away with it.
In this construction as shown in Figs. 41-7 I provide means for injecting a dust laying liquid into the cut at one or more points along the cutter arm so as to. spray the dust and. cause it to settle. In this construction a pipe duct or conveying device 40 for liquids such as water is connected with the cutter arm and is connected to any suitable source of liquid supply. For purposes of illustration I have shown this pipe connected by means of a pipe 41 with a pump cylinder 42 having a piston 43 operated by the motor of the cutting element. This pump cylinder is connected by means of a pipeetwithasourceofwater supplyef) located at any convenient point. The pipe or conductor 40 is provided. with one or more branches 41 which lead to the side,
of the cutter arm along which the cutter chain a6 is moving toward the machine. These branch pipes are provided with spraying nozzles 47 (see Fig. 7) so that a spray of liquid may be sent into the space 48 where the cutter knives 49 are working.
It will thus be seen that by means of this spraying device the dust produced by the cutter chain is sprayed at a point Within the space where the cutter chain is cutting, the dust being therefore settled before it comes out into the mine.
i have described in detail a particular construction embod ing the invention, but it is, of course, evident that the parts may be varied in many particulars without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1
therefore do not limit myself to the particular construction shown.
Referring to Fig. 8, it will be noted that the guide 8 for the pivot 7 is made up of two substantially straight sections disposed at an angle to each other and connected together by a curved section. It is essential that these substantially straight sections shall have guiding faces for the pivot, which are not a continuation of the curved sections and which are not arcs of a circle, although the guiding faces of these straight sections might be curved to some degree, although I prefer to make them without curved guiding faces, and I use the term, substantially straight sections to cover such constructions.

I claim 1. A mining machine comprising a main 1 ,with relation to feed the main frame, said pivots and constraining means arranged so that when the supporting frame is moved by said powentransmitting device, the cut ting device is fed to the material to be cut so as to produce a substantially straight cut. a 2. A mining machine comprising a main frame, a supporting frame mounted thereon, a cutting element on said supporting frame, said cutting element provided with a cutting device, two pivots connecting the supporting frame and the main frame, guideways in which said pivots move, one of said guideways being a straight guideway andthe other formed of two angular parts connected together, a drum connected with the supporting frame, means for driving said drum and a flexible power transmitting device on the drum, said flexible power transmitting device adapted to be con.- nected with a fixed point at one side of the machine so that when the drum is moved the supporting frame will be moved with relation to feed the main frame, said pivots and guideways arranged so that when the supporting frame is moved by said power-transmitting device, the cut ting deviceis fed to the material to be cut so as to'produce a substantially straight out;

A mining machine comprising a main frame, a supporting frame mounted thereon, a. cutting element carried by said supporting frame, said cutting element provided with a cutting device, two pivotsconnecting the main frame and the supporting frame together at difierent points, constraining means for constraining said pivots to compel them to move in predetermined paths, a flexible power transmitting device connected with said supporting frame and adapted to be connected to a fixed device at one side of the machine and means for applying power to said power transmitting device so as to move said supporting frame with relation to the main frame to cause the cutting device to be fed to the coal to produce substantially straight cut.
4:. A mining machine comprising a main frame, a supporting frame mounted thereon,
a cutting device, a movable part on the cutting element, a flexible power transmitting device connected with said movable part and adapted to be connected with a fixed part at one side of the machine and means for moving said movable part so as to cause the two frames to move relatively to feed the cutting device to the material to be cut to produce a substantially straight out.

A mining machine comprising a main frame, a supporting frame mounted thereon, two-pivots connecting the main frame and supporting frame, one of said frames provided with separated guide-ways along which the pivots move, a cutting element carried by the supporting frame, a, cutter connected with said cutting element, and means for simultaneously applying power to said cutter to actuate it and to said supporting frame so as to move the pivots alongtheir guideways to vary the position of sai cutter to feed the cutter to the material to be out to produce a substantially straight cut, the means for applying power to the supporting frame comprising a flexible power-transmitting device connected with the movable frame and adapted to be connected to a fixed point outside of the machine, and means for progressively shortening the effective length of said power-transmitting device.
6. A mining machine comprising a main frame, a supporting frame movably mounted thereon, separated sliding engaging connections between the two frames, a cutting element carried by said supporting frame and provided with a cutting device, a motor, a-
flexible power transmitting device operatively connected with said motor and adapted to be connected with a fixed part at one side of the machine, whereby when the motor is operated the two frames are moved relatively to feed the cuttin device to the coal to produce a substantial y straight cut.
7. A mining machine comprising a main frame, a supporting frame mounted thereon,
a cutting element carried by said supporting frame, two pivots connecting the main frame and the supporting frame, guiding devices for directing the movement of said pivots, and a flexible power transmitting device connected with the supporting frame and with a fixed point outside of the machine for moving the supporting frame so as to cause said pivots to move simultaneously along their respective guiding devices so as to feed the cutting element to the coal to produce a substantially straight out. j Y
