J OINTED TOY FIGURE.
Application filed March 27,1918. Serial No. 224,965.
Patent of the United States, No. 1,211,232,
granted to me on January 2, 1917.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved jointed toy fig-;
ure arranged to permit of readily and conveniently changing the positions of the' movable members of the figure to represent the figure in various artistic, grotesque or other attitudes or poses. Another object is to per- 1 mit of cheaply manufacturing the several parts of the jointed toy figure to allow the user to readily assemble the parts and to hold the same in the adjusted position without special fastening devices.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown-and described and specifically pointed out in the claims. I
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the jointed toy figure with parts shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the body sections on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the top portion of the head;
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the lower portion of. the head; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of one of the upper arms of the jointed toy figure.
The jointed toy figure represented in the drawings simulates a female, but I do not limit myself to this particular representa-- tion. The jointed toy figure in its general construction consists of an upper body section 10, a lower body section 11, a neck 12, a head 13, upper limbs 14 and combined calf and foot members 15.
The under side of the upper body section is provided with a semicircular recess Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
into which fits a rounded off tongue 21 mounted to swing on a pivot 22 extending.
sidewise through the side walls of the recess 20 and the center of the tongue 21 to allow of swinging the body sections 10 and 11 in a transverse direction to move the said body sections into the desired angular positions. The joint between the ton e 21 and the walls of the recess 20 is su ciently snug to hold the upper and lower body sections in the desired adjusted position. The rear wall 23 of the recess 20 is extended downward, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, to limit the rearward swinging movement of the body sections one relative to the other with a view. to hold the body sections in an approximately vertical position.
The neck 12 is in the form of a pin fastened at its lower end in a recess 25 formed in the top of the upper body section 10, and the pin terminates at its upper end in a ball 26 snu 1y fitting into a cylindrical recess 27 forme in the under side of the head 13. .By the arrangement described the head 13 can be readily turned in any desired direction on the ball 26 and the head remains in the adusted position owing to the frictional contact between the ball 26 and the walls of the recess 27. The head 13 comprises a lower portion 30 and an upper portion 31 which latter is shaped to include ahead covering and may be given various shapes to vary the appearance of the head covering. The lower head portion 30 is provided on the top with a transversely extending groove- 32 into which fits a tongue 33 depending from the under side of the upper head portion 31, the forward end 3 1 of the said tongue projecting beyond the front of the lower head portion 30 to form a nose, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The top of the lower head portion 30 and the under side of the upper head portion 31 are preferably fiat to form a tight joint thus hiding the ton e 33 except the front nose portion 34. he front of the lower head portion 30 is provided with eyes 35 and a mouth 36, as lainly'indicated in Figs. 2 and 5. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the upper head portion 31 may be moved transversely on the lower head portion 30 to project the nose more or less to suit the user.
Each of the upper limbs 14 consists of an upper arm 40 and a forearm 41 having an integral hand 42 provided with a slot 43 for portion of o Ml, plai' ly indicated ill be noticed that by this arrangement the upper limbs it may be swung i to any desired po sition and held in this position by the tional contact oi? the ball with the wail of the bore 46. The inner upper end of each upper arm i0 is provided with a bevel t0 permit an outward and upward swir iiovement oi the corresponding upper l ll. The lower end of each upper arm l0 is provided with a recess e8 into wnich fits the conical upper end ll) of the correspoi forearm ll to hold the latter in any desired adjusted position, it being understood that the side walls of the recess 48 form clamping jaws to clamp the conical end securely in place.
The lower body section 11 appears as a shirt but is made of a solid block of wood or other material provided at the under side with two transversely extending slots 50 spaced apart and each adapted to receive the conical shank 51 or the correspondin combined calf and foot member 15. The side walls of the grooves 50 form clamping jaws for securely clamping shanks 51 in place, it being understood that the said shanks may be inserted into the grooves at any point in termediate the frontand rear ends. The feet 52 have their soles beveled sidewise in an upward direction the same as the feet shown and described in my previous patent. so that further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the various members of the jointed toy figure can be readily taken apart, reassembled or adjusted in various positions by the user so that the figure represents various artistic, grotesque or other attitudes or poses to suit the users fancy.
It will also be noticed that when the several members are disassembled they can be readily packed into a small package for con= venient transportation or storage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent:-
