To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JULrUs LEoroLn and MoRRIs BEBERFELD, a citizen of the United States, and a subject of the Czar of Russia, respectively, and both residents of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates more particularly to a class of wearing apparel designed to be' worn by Women, and has for its object primarily the provision of a type of corset whereby the rotundity of the abdomen of a woman may be greatly reduced in appearance for imparting a shapely figure without injury or discomfort to the wearer, and which is also adapted to serve as a supporter for the abdomen following certain surgical operations instead of employing the usual types of abdominal bandages. This is accomplished mainly by providing a body composed of two halves for being removably fitted on a person, and to the hip portion of each half is held one end of a flexible ment so as to be disposed in overlapping arrangement across theabdominal portion of the halves of the body, and in one of the fiapmembers is an opening for passage of the second flap member, while protruding from the hip portions of the halves of the body of the corset are two elastic straps to which the flap members aredetachably fastened to allow the'fiapmembers to yield-when Other obj ects of the invention are to provide adjustable means whereby the elastic straps may be lengthened and shortened when desired; to provide complemental de-.

vices to allow the flap members and the straps to be detachably fastened; and to provide a corset of a simple and efficient c0n- 'struction which may be made in various styles and sizes.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

' The corset is made with a body 10 composed of two halves 11 and 12 which are preferably of corresponding formations, and this body may be'made in various styles with high or low bust and long or short hips. As is incident to the usual forms of corsets the rear ends of the halves of the body 10 are laced together, as at 13, in the customary manner to permit the halves to be adjusted relative to each other, while the front ends of the halves of the corset may be detachably fastened by means of the ordinary forms of hook and'eye clasps, as 14, and also by laces, as 15. Inserted in the front of the half 11 of the body of the corset may be a gore 15 of rubber webbing or other elastic material extending from the hip part of the half across its abdominal portion so as to terminate at or in proximity to the front edge of this half, and inserted in the front half 12 of the body of the corset may be a similar gore 16 also of rubber or other elastic material which extends from the hip part of the second half transversely of its abdominal portion so as to terminate at or contiguous to its front edge. These elastic gores may be of widths adapted to embrace part of or the entire abdomen of the wearer for exercising a yielding pressure thereon, though forms of the corset may be made wherein the gores are dispensed with if desired.

Serving to cause the rot-undity of the abdomen of the wearer'of the garment to be reduced as well as affording a comfortable support for the abdomen, a pair of cooperating flap members 17 and 18 are provided. These flap members are preferably of corresponding shapes as well as being made of strong rdurable cloth, or like flexible material, and each flap member has a main portion, as 19. One end of the main portion of the flap member 17 is stitched, or otherwise secured to the hip portion of the half llofthe body of the corset so as to be swung across the abdominal part of the corset body on the gore l5, andone end of the main portion of the-flap member 18 is siniilarly stitched, or otherwise secured to the hip portion of the half 12 of the body of the corset so as to be swung transversely of the abdominal part of the corset body on the gore 16. The main portions 19 of these flap members may be somewhat wider and well as to cover the abdomen of the wearer.

Preferably from the upper part of the second end of the main portion 19 of each ofthe flap members is a laterally projecting tongue 20 of considerably less width than the .mainportion. of its flap member, and these tongues may be of the same material as the main portions as well as being disposed'on alinement. Through the part of the flexible flap member 17 at the juncture of its tongue 20 with its main portion is an elongated opening 21 for permitting the passage therethrough of the tongue 20 of the flap member 18 when the flap members are disposed crosswise of the corset body. Both of the tongues will thereby lie on the exposed surfaces of the main portions of the flap members in opposite directions toward the ends of members which are secured to the halves of the body of the corset, and each of these tongues is of a length so that its free end extends approximately to the central part of the main portion of the other flap member.

In order to permit the free end of the tongue 20 of each flap member to be detachably fastened to the second half of the body of the corset, we provide two straps, as 22 and 23. Both of the straps 22 and 23 are approximately of similar widths to the tongues 20 of the flexible flap members 17 and 18, and these straps may be made of rubber webbing, or other elastic material. One end of the strap 22 is stitched, or otherwise fastened on the half 11 of the body of the corset at the fixed end of the flap member 17 so as to be swung whereby second end will be opposed to the free end of the tongue 20 of the flap member 18, and one end of the strap 23 is stitched, or otherwise secured on the half 12 of the body of the corset at the fixed end of the flap member 18 for being swung so that its second end will be in opposition to the free end of the tongue 20 of the flap member 17. The elastic straps 22 and 23 may be of any desired lengths, and to allow these straps to be adjustably lengthened or shortened for per- .mitting the flap. members to be distended or contracted according to the adjustment of the halves of the body of the corset as well as according to the shape of the abdomen of the wearer, in the central part of each strap may be provided two vertically posed spaced rows of sockets, as 2 1 and 25.

At the end of "each strap maybe arranged one row of buttons, or knobs, as 26, of a like number to the sockets of each row, and these buttons are spaced apart at distances corresponding to the spaces between the sockets of each rowof the strap. These sockets and buttons are preferably of well known types adapted to be removably fastened together by forcing the buttons of each strap into the sockets of one ofthe rows thereof. By reason of the rows of sockets 2 1 and25 of each strap being arranged at spaced intervals on the central part lengthwise of the strap, while the buttons are arranged at thee-end of the strap a loop, as 27, will be provided on the end of the. strap when the buttons are inserted in one ofthe rows of thesockets, I

be releasably attached to the elastic straps I 22 and 23, we provide fastening devices, as 28 and 29, both of which may be of similar well known types. Each of the devices is composed of two complemental members, as

30 and 31, and each of the members 30 consists of one or a number of hooks projecting from the free end part of the tongue 20 of each of the flap members, while each of the members 31 is preferably formed of an apertured bar with two eyes extending therefrom, as illustrated. Each of the members 31 is movably arranged in the loop 27 of each of the elastic straps by passing the end of the strap through the apertured bar of the member so that its eyes maybe engaged by the member, or hooks 30 of the opposing flap member preceding the formation of the loops by adjusting the buttons and sockets of the straps accordingly, as above explained,

The garment is applied to a person by fitting the body 10 on the wearer in the manner common to the use of usual types of corsets following the opening of the halves 11 and 12 of the body as well as the subsequent fastening together of the halves after their proper adjustment. The flap members 17 and 18 are then guided in overlapping arrangement aoross the abdominal portion of the body with the tongue 20 of the flap member 18 being inserted through the opening 21 of the flap. member 17 The members of the complemental,fasteningdevices 28 and 29 are afterward connectedby the hook members 30 of the fiapniembers of the members 31 of these fastening devices for detachably connecting the flap members to the straps 22 and 23. The resiliency of the straps coacting with the flap members will thereby serve to cause the rotundity of the abdomen of the wearer of the corset to be reduced as well as supporting the abdomen without injury or discomfort to the person.

In the foregoing description, we have embodied the preferred form of our-invention, but we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore we reserve to ourselves the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a corset, the combination with a body composed of two adjustably connected halves each having attached thereto one end of a flap member adapted to be disposed across the abdominal portion of the halves, of two elastic straps each projecting from one of the halves toward the flap member of the other half of the body, means for adjustably lengthening and shortening the straps, and complemental fastening devices whereby each flap member may be detachably fastened to the strap of its opposite half of the body.

2. In a corset, the combination with a body composed of two adjustably connected halves each having attached thereto one end of a flap member adapted to be disposed across the abdominal portion of the halves, of two yielding straps each projecting from the hip portion of one of the halves toward the flap member ofthe other half of the body, two adjustable loops one on each strap and complemental fastening devices on the loops of the straps and on the flap members whereby the free end of each flap member may be detachably fastened to the strap of its opposite half of the body.

8. In a corset with a body composed of two adjust-ably connected halves, two flexible flap members each having one of its ends attached to the hip portion of one of the halves of the body so as to be disposed in overlapping arrangement across the abdominal portion of the halves and one of the flap members having an opening for passage of the second flap member, two yielding straps each projecting from the hip portion of one of the halves toward the flap member of the other half of the body, and complemental fastening devices on the straps and on the flap members whereby the free end of each flap member may be detachably fastened to the strap of its opposite half of the body.

4. In a corset with a body composed of two adjustably connected halves, two flexible flap members each having one of its ends attached to the hip portion of one of the halves of the body so as to be disposed in overlapping arrangement across the abdominal portion of the halves and one of the flap members having an opening for passage of the second flap member, two adjustable elastic straps each projecting from the hip portion of one of the halves toward the flap member of the other half of the body, and means whereby the free end of each flap member may be detachably fastened to the strap of its opposite half of the body.

5. In a corset with a body composed of two adjustably connected halves, two flexible flap members each having one of its ends attached to the hip portion of one of the halves of the body so as to be disposed in overlapping arrangement across the abdominal portion of the halves and one of the flap members having an opening for passage of the second flap member, two yielding straps each projecting from the hip portion of one of the halves toward the flap member of the other half of the body, two adjustable loops one on each strap, and means whereby the free end of each flap member may be detachably fastened to the strap of its opposite half of the body.
