LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,984.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I", ARTHUR- P. WYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monterey, in the county of Monterey and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looks, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and particularly to looks of the mortise type.
The object of the invention is the provision of a lock which is constructed of few parts and which is strong and durable of construction and simple of operation.
A further'object of the invention is the provision of a lock in connection with which the usual rotatable door knob is unnecessary, it being only necessary to pull or push the door to open the same, and to also provide a lock in which the locking element is combined with the latch.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with the invention and shown applied to a portion of a door, the door being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on a line with the rotatable shaft which carries the locking dog;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking dog and its shaft;
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the supporting spring member; and
Fig. 5 is a view of a key which may be used in the operation of the lock.
Referring more specifically to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a frame which is of substantially U-shape, and is provided with outwardly turned flanges 3 to which are secured the ends of a connecting plate 4. The plate 4 is provided with a circular opening 5, through which is projected a spherlcal spring supported locking element 6, which may be formed of any suitable material. The element 6 is adapted to project partly through the opening and is held in position by a supporting spring member 7 which has one end riveted to the plate 4 as shown at 8, and has its opposite end formed with a substantially right angular extension 9 and side wings 10, in order to provide a supporting seat for the locking element 6. The member 7 is as stated adapted to support the said element and to urge it forward so that it'will partially project through the opening 5 for engagement with an opening 11 in a keeper plate 12 carried by the door casing.
For the purpose of locking the element 6 within the opening of this plate so as to prevent the opening of the door, there is provided a locking dog 13, which is carried by a rotatable shaft 14 mounted in suitable bearings in a band 15 carried by the frame. The shaft 14.- is provided with a. longitudinally disposed slot 16 for the insertion of a suitable key by means of which the dog 13 may be moved into and out of engagement with the spring member 7 to permit the door to be locked.
In order to hold the spring member 7 against movement when engaged by the locking dog 13, the said member is provided with a lug 7, which is formed by striking up a portion of the member 7 and bending it at right angles for engagement with the end of the locking dog. As this dog is engaged with the lug 7 it will be seen that movement of the member 7 is prevented and the looking element 6 will therefore remain in engagement with the keeper plate until the dog 13 is disengaged by a suitable key hereinafter referred to.
The lock is preferably constructed so as to require a particular key to operate it, and to this end there is provided adjacent the band 15 a plate 17, the said plate being formed with a circular opening 18 and being provided with a lug l9 projecting into the said opening. Upon the opposite side of the back there is provided a plate 20 formed with a socket 21 for the reception of the reduced end 22 of the key 23. The key 23 is also provided with oppositely disposed notches 24 arranged to register with the lug 19 in order to permit the turning of the key for the manipulation of the dog 13. The door may be provided with a suitable aperture 25 for the insertion of the key and if desired an apertured plate 26 may surround the aperture 25.
From the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of the lock will be apparent and that further description will be unnecessary.
' ends secured to said frame, a locking element posltloned between sald frame and Saul supporting member and projecting through an opening in the frame for yielding engagement with a keeper plate, means carried 10 by said supporting member for retaining said locking element therein, a locking dog" adapted to be moved into the path of said supporting member and an engaging lug struck-up from said spring supporting member and positioned in the path of movement of the looking dog to limit its movement in one direction.
In testimony whereof afiix my signature.
ARTHUR P. WYMAN.
