'Applicationled February 24, S1917. Serial No;`150,755. i
To all whom i may concern:
Be it known that I, Mouais L. Sirven@ STEIN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Methuen, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knob Bolt-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to door locks and is primarily designed yto provide a bolt whose housing is formed integral with the door knob escutcheon to facilitate the application of the bolt and to provide means for locking the door upon the inside, independent of the ordinary lock.v
A further object of the invention is to provide a Vlock keeper plate formed with means for receiving the bolt so as to obviate the necessity of providing a separate keeper for the bolt, which is always unsightly and is likely to become displaced by the pulling out of the screws.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation oi' a portion of a door with the invention applied thereto, the door knob being shown by dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of the door and the adjacent jamb, the bolt and keeper plate being shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the escutcheon plate and bolt; and
Fig. at is a similar view of the keeper plate. n
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral 10 designates an escutcheon plate provided with the usual opening 11 to receive the shank of the door knob, by means of which the latch is operated. The plate 10 is formed with an integral extension 12 which is adapted to terminate flush with or adjacent the edge of the door. The plate 10 and the extension 12 are each formed with openings 13 to provide for the insertion of screws or other fastening devices by means of which the said plate may be attached to the face of the door. The extension 12 is also formed with rectangular guiding arches 14, within which the bolt 15 is adapted to operate. f lV'hile the 'boltand `arches 14' are herein kshown as rectangular, it is of course obvious that the bolt may be round and the arches shaped accordingly. Located between the arches 14% are guide flanges 16, the knob 17 of the bolt being adapted t0 pr0- ject through these flanges to provide a convenient means for operating the said bolt.
Secured to the door jamb or casing is a keeper plate 18, the said plate being formed with the usual apertures 19 and 2() to receive respectively the latch and bolt of the ordinary lock. The usual openings 21 are formed in this plate for the reception of screws or other fastening devices to provide means for attaching the keeper t0 the j amb. The keeper plate 1S is provided with a lateral extension 22, which has formed therein an opening 28, the said opening being located in a position to receive the bolt 15. An angular extension 23 is also formed on the plate 18, this extension being formed by a continuation of the extension 22, and is positioned to be secured to the face of the door amb, or trim by a screw or other fastening device 24 passing through an opening 25 formed in this extension.
Various changes in the form and proportion of vthe invention may be made, for example the bolt and keeper are herein shown as applied to a door with the lock on the left hand side and it is obvious that by a slight modication the bolt may be applied upon the opposite side of the door or the bolt carrying extension 12 may be located in a plane above or below the knob as desired and the right is reserved to make these and such other changes as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed, is;
l. rlhe combination with a door lock and an operating knob therefor provided with an escutcheon plate, of a bolt carrying eX- tension formed integral with said escutcheon plate, a bolt operable thereon, a keeper plate for said bolt, said plate being formed by an angular extension of one edge of the keeper plate of the lock and a laterally eX- tending terminal portion formed on said eX- tension to provide securing means therefor.
2. The combination with a door lock and an operating knob therefor provided with an escutcheon plate, a bolt carrying eXtension :formed integralvwith said plate, said extension loelg provided with boli guiding arches, guiding flanges located between Said a'elles, a bolt operable therein and a keeper fol said bolt formed integral with the 5 keeper plate of the lock.
operable thereon, a lateral extension formed integral with the lool; keepel plate and provided with un Opening 'to receive the bolt and an angulal' extension formed on `Said. lateral extension fol1 attachment to the door casing. Y Y
In testimony whereof ax my signature.
HORSES L. SLVERSTEN.
