Description

I. R. FLANNERY, B. E. D. STAFFORD & E. I. 00008. STAY BOLT STRUCTURE. APPLICATION men 001.25. 1911.
Patented 060.15, 1918.
WITNESSES v INVENTORS W 300: V w
' .Q I v W 1 I fame JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD, AND ETHAN I. DOIDIDS, OF PITTS- BURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTS- BURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed October 25, 1917. Serial No. 198,478.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN R. FLANNERY, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD, and ETHAN I. DoDDs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for indicating a rupture in a staybolt having a tell-tale bore, the object of the invention being to provide simple and eflicient means which will operate in the event of a rupture of the bolt to mechanically expel a plug to denote such ruptured condition.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional View illustrating an embodiment of our invention.
1 represents a staybolt having a bore 2, the open end of which may be made somewhat conical to receive a plug 3. I
A tube 4 is located within the bore 2 of the bolt and is provided at its inner end with a hole 5, and the plug 3 above referred to is made of suflicient length to enter the outer end of said tube.
A body of soluble material 5, such as salt for example, is located within the tube 4 and in this body of soluble material a spring 6 is embedded. The spring 6 is put under more or less compression or tension when being embedded in the soluble material and the whole is so compressed as to normally maintain the spring 6 under tension and preferably out of contact with the plug 8.
In the event that a rupture of the bolt occurs whereby water or moisture may enter the tell-tale bore 2, such water or moisture will enter the tube 4 through the hole 5 and dissolve the soluble material 5, thus releasing the spring 6 which had been held under tension by said material and causing it to expand and drive, out the plug 3 from the tell-tale bore and thereby denote that the bolt is ruptured.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is;
1. The combination with a staybolt having a tell-tale bore and a plug normally closing said bore, of a spring within the bore, an abutment for one end of said spring, and soluble material normally holding said spring under tension and adapted to release the same when moisture enters the bore and permits said spring to eject the plug for denoting a ruptured condition of the bolt.
2. The combination with a staybolt having a tell-tale bore, of a tube within said bore, said tube having an entrance opening for moisture a plug normally closing said tube and bore, soluble material located within said tube, and a spring embedded in said soluble material and normally held under tension thereby.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
