STEAM BOILER STAY BOLT PLUG.
APPLICATION mm FEB. 3. 1915.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February'ii, 1915. Serial No. 5,873. j
Be it known that I, Bonn BZFREER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and'State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Stay- Bolt Plugs, of which the following is a specification; V 1
My invention relates to steam-boilers of the water-tube type, and more particularly.
to the sub-type thereof having the ends of the water-tubes communicating with waterlegs. 1
It is the object of my invention to provide the hollow" stay-bolts for the sides of the water legs with preferably non corrosive metal plugs to prevent the air from shortcircuiting the fire grate or burners beneath the water-tubes. j
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation, partlyin section, of a portion of a steam-boiler; Fig. 2, an enlarged view showing a portion of a Stay-bolt in one wall of a water-leg, and one of my plugs in the stay-bolt; Fig; 3, a'side elevation, partly in section, showing the preferred form of my stay-bolt plug; and Fig. 1, an end view of a portion of the outer wall of a water-leg with one ofmy plugs in a stay-bolt.
On the drawing, 1 designates a horizontal boiler, only one end portion thereof being shown.
2 is a'water-leg secured to the under side of the boiler 1 and provided with the opposite nearly vertical side-walls 3 and 4, and the end-Walls 5 and 6. y
7 and 8 are the water-tubes which have their ends secured in the inner wall 1 and opening into the water-leg 2. The walls 3 and 4: are tied together by numerous hollow stay-bolts, only one, marked 9, being shown. The stay-bolts are threaded externally and screwed into the walls 3 and 1 whereby the walls 3 and 4 are prevented from changing their relative positions, such as spreading.
If the stay-bolts have their central, or axial, openings left open, considerable air will pass through them instead of going through the usual fire-grate or burners beneath the water-tubes. To prevent the air from short-circuiting or bypassing the gratev or burners, I provide for each stay-bolt the plug comprising the closure member 10 and the closure retaining and operating member :brass or other'non-corrosive substance.

11'. The member'10 is preferably tapered on one face, marked 12, and plane on the opposite face,-marked 13.- The member'll is composed ofpreferably a single piece of resilient wire which I prefer to ,make of The member 11 has its central portion bent back *on itself to form the loop 14'. The free'ends of the member 11 form legsl5 which lie one over the other and are spread apart so that they will simultaneously engage diametrically oppositeportions of the interior'wall of the axial opening16 in the stay-bolt and to exert sufiicient pressure on the said wall to prevent the member 10,1which is carried by the intermediate portion 17 of the 11181117 ber 11, from moving fromits normalposisaid intermediate portion of the member 11 tion, which is shown on Figs. 1 and 2. The
and the legs 15 extending beyond the coniparallel, or in contact, with the wall. of the stay-bolt opening 16 so as to hold the member 11in line with the stay-bolt and the member 10 in close contact with the outer .end of the stay-bolt with the conical face 12 pro ecting for some distance into the said 'cal face 12. The legs 15 of the member 11 I have. considerable portions thereof lying make the ends of'the legs 15 inclined toward f each other as shown at 17.
I prefer that the'two members 10 and 11 shallcbe made of such material as will not rust or corrode in the stay-bolt and thereby prevent the ready removal of, the plug. For example, the member. 10 may be made of Babbitt metal or lead, and the member 11 of brass or bronze. The loop 141 provides a convenient piece which the fingers may grasp or an extracting tool may be applied. I do not limit myself to the definite shapes of the members 10 and '11 shown on the drawings.
1. In a steam-boiler, a stay-bolt with an opening throughout its length, a closure for the opening, and a retaining member extending through the closure and having at one end a resilient portion in engagement with the wall of the opening and at the other opening throughout its length, a non-corrosive closure for the'opening, and a non-cor rosive retaining member extending through they closure and having at one end a resilient portion 111 engagement with the Wall of the opening and at the other end a suitable finger piece.- I
3. In a steam-boiler, a stay-bolt with. an
opening throughout its length, a closure for Copies of this patent may be obtained for distance as to prevent the closure from mov-- ing downwardly 4. In a steu1n-boiler, a, stay-bolt "with an opening throughout lts length, ,a stopper for the opening,;ancl a retaining member extend ing through'the closure, rigidly connected to the stopper and having at one end a resilient portion in. engagement With the Wall oiitheopening.
