mvsmon WITNESSES m h ATTORNEY JOHN W. NEISTRA'I H, OF'BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI.
BROOM-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application flied May 23, 1916. Serial No. 99,435.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. Nnrs'nmrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biloxi, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to broom or mop holders and its primary object is to provide a household device that may be placed in position for holding a broom or mop in suspended position, thereby eliminating the possibility of the broom or mop becoming warped or distorted as implements of this character often do when they are allowed to stand in a corner or some such similar place.
As a further objectof the invention the device contemplates the provision of a broom suspending device which can be mounted upon a stand. the stand being adapted to consume a minimum of space and adapted to be moved from one place to the other whereby the broom or mop may be placed within convenient reach of the user.
The invention also aims to provide a broom or mop holder which is extremely simple in operation, the use of springs or clips beino eliminated and the weight of the implement being depended upon to hold the handle of the implement in suspended posi tion.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a broom or mop holder which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected. v
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the broom or mop holder, a pair of brooms being shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the broom holder mounted upon a stand.
As il r d by F g 1 a d 2 0f he drawing the device consists of a fastening plate 1 which is substantially semi-ovoid in outline and is provided with screw holes through which fastening screws or bolts 2 may be extended for fastening the plate 1 to the wall. Vertically extending, centrally located integrally formed with the plate 1 is the tongue 3 which, at each of its opposite sides, is provided. with a vertically extend- 1ng groove 4 in which the handle of the broom or mop lies when it is suspended from the holder. Pivotally mounted at each end of the plate, is a fastening pawl 5, the free ends of which are sharpened or provided with teeth 6 for engaging the handl of the broom or mop. When applying a broom or mop to the device it is only necessary to lay the end of the handle of the implement in the groove and slide it upwardly, thereby throwing one of the pawls 5 upwardly on its pivot, and, when the broom or mop is ralsed to the desired height, by simply rcleasing the broom, it will be engaged by the end of the pawl 5 and its weight will tend to draw the pawl downwardly thereby causingl it to tightly grip the handle at its free en In Fig. 3 of the drawing is shown the device, as above described, mounted upon a standard 7 the lower end of which is provided with a tripod 8 for obviatin the pos sibility of upsetting when the imp. ement is suspended from the holder.
In reduction to practice I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practicable, yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrlficing any of the advanta es of my invention as defined in the appen ed claim.
I claim:
The combination of a support having a vertical tongue arran ed thereon in thecenter thereof and provi ed with opposite vertically extending grooves of a width less than the thickness of the said tongue, a.
pair of broom handles, each adapted for handles to normally maintain them in the reception in one of the said grooves, the said grooves. 10 depth'ozf' thelatter-being less-them the diam-.- Imtestimon whereost I afi-x my signature eter 0 thebroom'liandle whereby 2 portion in presenee 0 two witnesses.
