WILBER F. CORNELIUS, OF MUN OIE, INDIANA.
MOP AND' BRUSH HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,067, dated April 15. 1884. Application filed November 5, 1883. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBER F. CORNELIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Mop and Brush Holder, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mop and brush holders; and the object of my invention is to construct a cheap and durable device for holding brushes, rubbers, or mops for scrubbing and mopping floors and cleaning windows. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side View with a part broken away. Fig. 3 is an end view with the screw or handle-socketremoved, and Fig. 4 is a View of the-handlesocket.
Similar letters refer to similar out the several views.
On each side of the ferrule A is secured the jaw b I), the said jaw curving outward and downward, as shown in Fig. 2. Lugs b are formed on said ferrule just under the jawarms 7), as shown, and the upper side of said ferrule is provided with a pivoted springpawl, c, which works between the two small lugs l 2, so that it may be turned around, as
To the lower ends of the lugs b' is pivoted the jaw 13 by the studsf, projecting through a hole in each lug, as shown. The center part of said jaw is provided with cogs or threads parts throughf, and the outer edge with teeth f, for clamp ing into the brush or other articles placed between the jaws.
A threaded handle-socket, O, is inserted in the ferrule A, and the catches d prevent it from coming out, all as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said catches d are cast to the ferrule, and when the screw-socket is in place they are pressed inward, thus preventing it from coming out, but allowing it to turn freely. One end of the screw-socket is provided with a ratchet, e, and the other end with threads 0, as shown in Fig. 4. \Vhen the screw-socket is inserted in the ferrule A, one end of the spring 0' is curved, so as to fit in the ratchet,
serving as a pawl, and the threads e engage with the cogs f in the jaw B, so that byturning the handle (or screw-socket) the jaws are opened or closed, as desired. The under side of one end of the ferrule is cut away, allowing the cogsf to reach up into the screw-threads e, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. \Vhen the handle is turned to the right, thejaws are closed, and the spring-pawl c c prevents it from working loose. When the pawl is lifted out from between the lugs, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. l, the handle can be turned to the left, thereby opening the jaws. The handle D is secured in the socket by a screw, 6', an opening, a, for which is cut in the ferrule, as shown.
The screw 0 may be separated from the ferrule by spreading the catches (Z sufficiently.
By the jaws b being placed on an angle with the ferrule the proper bevel is given for working on horizontal or perpendicular surfaces, and the slots b" may be of advantage in placing special rubbing-s11 rfaces between the jaws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim the following and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent:
1. In a mop and brush holder, the ferrule A, provided with lugs 'b, in combination with jaws B b b, screw 0, ratchet and pawl, and catches d.
2. In a mop and brush holder, the ferrule A, having a spring-pawl, c 0', lugs 1 2, and catches d, in combination with the jaws and screw 0.
3. The combination of the screw 0, having ratchet e, and threads 6, with the catches d and ferrule A, having lugs l 2, and springpawl c c.
4. In a mop and brush holder, the combination of jaws Bb b, lugs b, screw 0, handle D, ratchet e, pawl c c, and lugs 1 and 2, all for the purpose set forth. j
\VILBER F. CORNELIUS.
