JOSEPH M. BOULLIER, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LGGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1918.
Application filed March 13, 1918. Serial No. 222,225.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn M. BOULLIER, a citizen of France, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in looks and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the bolt of the lock may be readily retracted.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a lock especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a box and wherein novel and improved means are employed for operating the lock and wherein said means are substantially concealed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved lock wherein the operating means for the lock is so arranged as to be generally unknown to unauthorized persons.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved lock whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a container with which is employed a lock constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through my improved look as illustrated in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 with the cover omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a box of predetermined dimensions and configuration and which is provided with a hinged cover 0. The
cover C is provided with the marginal flange 1 adapted to overlie an adjacent marginal portion of the wall of the box B when the cover C is in closed position although this construction is not essential.
Pivotally engaged with the flange 1 is a swinging plate or hasp 2 provided with the inwardly directed perforate ear or lug 3. The perforate ear or lug 3 extends through a suitable opening 4 in the adjacent wall of the box B when the cover C is in closed position and the plate or hasp 2 is swung toward said wall. Overlying the inner face of the wall of the box B with which the ear or lug 3 coacts is a casing or housing H positioned between the opening 4 and an .end of the box B. The outer wall of the housing or casing H adjacent the top thereof is provided with the inwardly directed lugs or bearings 12 which support for sliding movement the elongated bolt or looking member 5. The inner end portion of the bolt or locking member 5 is disposed through a suitable opening 14 in the end of the casing or housing H immediately adjacent the opening 4 and said member or bolt is also adapted to extend through the openin in the ear or lug 3 for holding the cover in closed position.
The outer end portion. of the locking member or bolt 5 is operatively connected as at 6 with the vertically disposed lever 7. The lever 7 is also arranged within the housing or casing H and is pivotally engaged at substantially its longitudinal center with the outer or face wall of the housing or casing H. The lower end portion of the lever 7 extends through the registering slots 8 in the bottom of the box B and the lower wall of the housing or casing H, and the portion of the lever 7 exteriorly of the box is provided with a knob or foot 9 which is substantially identical with the feet or knobs 10 positioned adjacent certain of the corner of the box B. The knobs or feet 9 and 10 serve as supports for the box when resting upon a surface and to the general observer, there will be nothing to indicate how the lock for holding the cover 0 closed may be operated. When an authorized person desires to open thecover C it is only necessary to impart movement to the knob or foot 9 in one direction which will result in the rocking of the lever 7 This movement of the lever 7 will serve to retract the bolt or looking member 5 from engagement with diate its length for swinging-movement, one end portion of said lever being operatively engaged with the bolt, the opposite end-porand engageable with the-member carriedby the'cover when .said member is disposed .through the slot, a lever supported intermediate its length for swinging movement,
thought to be obvious that a lock constructed in-accordanoe with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reasonfof the convenience and facility withwhich it maybe assembled and operated audit-will also'be obviou that my invention is sus oeptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles' and spirit thereof and for this reason I do'not -wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precisearrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice-except as hereinafter claimed. Y
I claim: 7 V
lQ In combination with a box provided withan opening in a wall thereof, acover, a hasp carried by the cover and provided with an inwardly directed perforate ear insertible through the opening in the wall of the box, a bolt mounted for sliding movement within the box and insertible through the opening of the ear when said ear is disposed through the slot, a lever supported intermetion of the lever extendingexteriorly=of the box.
