Description
1. PLOPPE R. FOL DABLE CANDLE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 2|. 19H.

, w a a a JAMES A. PLOPPER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
FOLDABLE CANDLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
Application filed December 21, 1917. Serial No. 208,319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. PLOPPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foldable Candle-Holdersof which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the providing of a candle holder made of wire and especially adapted for army and campuse. To this end it is so made as to be folded compactly, and one of its particular features is that it may be stood on a flat support, or hung from a post or wall, and in either case serves to hold the handle in vertical position.
. In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of my candle holder showing the same as arranged when stood on some supporting surface; the candle being shown in broken outline;
Fig. 2 shows my candle holder as hung from a nail on a post;
Fig. 3 is a partial top view looking in the direction pointed by the arrow a, in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a detail of construction seen when looking at my device on the line pointed by the arrow 5 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 shows my candle holder folded together.
My device is made of wire and comprises two members hinged together; the member 0 is formed to provide a foot 03; the ends of the wire being twisted together as at e, and thence projecting parallel, spaced apart, as shown by f, g. The end f is formed near its extremity with an inturned arm h, provided with an eye 2', and the arm 9 is provided with a companion arm '1', which slides in the eye 71. The ends f, g are formed to constitute a bow-like clamp for holding the candle; the extremities of said ends being formed with hinge-eyes is, Z. In the latter is hinged the member m, which is formed at its free end with a loop a; the ends being twisted together as at 0, and thence arranged parallel, spaced apart, as shown by p, q;
and at r these ends are formed to constitute an auxiliary bow-like clamp for holding the candle.
For making my holder, I use wire having tension of the parts f, g and p, 9 provides the grip that holds the candle.
\Vhen my holder is to be placed on a fiat surface, it will be arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the candle being then supported by the bow-like clamp 7", g; and when to be suspended from an upright surface, as shown in Fig. 2, then the upper end of the candle will be inserted in the bowlike clamp r, the lower portion passing down between the members 7', g, the loop a then serving to suspend the holder from a nail, or other support, as at 2 and the foot d resting againstthe post. The loop' a may also serve as a hook to hang over a ledge, or edge of a box, or on a stake driven in the ground.
lVhen the candle holder is not in use it may be folded together as shown in Fig. 5. The device is so proportioned that when folded the lower end of the candle can pass through the loop a of the member m and the upper end of the candle held in the clamps f, g.
It is to be noted that the hinge eyes p, of the member m are connected with the hinge eyes 70, Z, of the member 0 in such wise as to limit the spread of said members. This is necessary to assure that the candle holder will not collapse when set up on a flat surface, as shown in Fig. 1, and also that it will be properly supported when hung from a vertical surface,as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim:
1. A foldable candle holder comprising two members each made of a wire piece, one of such members consisting of a foot from which the two wire ends extend in parallel relation, spaced apart, one of such ends having an inturned arm provided with an eye, the other end having an opposed companion arm sliding in said eye, said ends having bowed portions constituting a clamp, and their extremities being provided with hinge eyes; the other member being hinged to said hinge eyes and being formed with a loop at its free end, the wire ends extending from said loop parallel and spaced apart, and having auxiliary bow-like clamp portions near their hinges.
2. A foldable holder comprising two parts hinged together at one end and adapted to be spread apart at an angle to each other or to be folded together spaced apart, the hinge being adapted to restrain such spreading beyond a predetermined degree, each to be folded together spaced apart, the hinge being adapted to restrain such spreading beyond a predetermined degree, each part comprising two parallel resilient members constituting a clamp adapted to be opened by pressing the members together, one part being provided with a foot'at its free'end and the other part being provided at its frte end with a loop projecting inwardly across the space separating th two parts when folded together.
JAMES A. PLOPPER.
part comprising'two parallel resilient members constituting a clamp adapted to be opened by pressing the mem'b'ers together, one part being longer than the other, and the longer part being provided with a foot at its free end and the shorter part being provided at its free end with a loop projecting inwardly across thespae'e separating the two parts when folded together.
3. A foldable holder comprising two parts hinged togetherat one endand adapted to be spread apart at an angle to-each other or (topics of thlaupatent may be oBtai-ned for five cents each, 'by'addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washingtonfl); 0.
