DULUTH, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO DULUTH SHOW CASE s'ronn-rrxrunn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed November 22, 1916. Serial No. 132,782.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY ARCHER OSTRAM, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'in general to store fixtures and more particularly to a display and storage case for articles of merchanise.
In handling lines of merchandise, such for example as hardware where the stock comprises a multitude of relatively small articles, much difficulty is experienced by the Storekeeper in maintaining the stock in readily accessible and salable condition. Stock cases have heretofore been devised in which different species of articles are dis posed in separate drawers with a sample of each species secured to the face of the drawer in which it is contained. A number of different species of each genus or class of articles are frequently carried in stock and this necessitates the removal by the salesman of the several species from the drawers or of all ofthe drawers containing the genus or class of articles desired whenever a sale is contemplated, so that the prospective buyer may be acquainted with the selection of merchandise ofiered by the storekeeper and select therefrom. The cus tomer thereby obtains access to the stock, frequent handling of which results in de terioration of the finish and ultimately renders a portion of the stock unsalable. Moreover, in making sales according to this system much time is lost owing to the difliculty of finding desired articles and returning them to their proper receptacles when no longer needed and sales are lost because of lack of knowledge of the stock by salesmen. i
It is the object of my invention to provide a display door for store fixture cabinets adapted for the permanent exhibition of samples of the goods contained in the cabinet behind the door and to mount said samples on one or more removable back panels of the door which can be readily taken out for inspection of the samples in making sales and replaced without disturbing the samples 0r any oth r panels and plurality of drawers 2 which are normally concealed and protected by hinged doors 3. The cabinet may be built in any size and shape desired, in one unit or in sections and provided with shelves instead of the drawers 2, as may be desired. The cabinet 1 may rest on a support-as indicated in the drawing which may contain storage compartments or the cabinet may itself be provided with supporting means and in fact may be supported in any suitable manner.
- In the particular form of the invention shown in the drawings the door comprises a facing 4:, a glass front 5 mounted in the facing, side walls 6, and bottom and top walls 7 mounted on the facing at the back thereof. The back of the door may be made of one or more removable panels, but I have shown four panels 9 disposed between the channel members 8 which are so arrange that the distance between the bottoms of oppositely disposed channels is somewhat greater than the width of the panel to be inserted therein so that by grasping the handles 10 the panels may be readily removed and disposed upon the counter '(not shown). Thus the articles of merchandlse which are secured to the panels may be displayed to the prospective customer It is my intention that each of the articles secured to one of the panels 9 be provided with a suitable key number, which number is duplicated upon one of the drawers 2 in whicharticles corresponding to the sample on a panel 9 are disposed. Consequently when the customer has selected the desired article from those available, as shown by h les 9 the P n-e 9, the alarm turns to r w r bi l hQ 9 5 99 13 ing number and obtains the article desired.
The panel 9"bea'riiig the samples inay'tlien' of the salesman by makingit possible for liinit'o ivorlfin ore ra-p i'dl'y' The maximum efficiency of the case itself is also insured because it provides for the continuous display'of the stock, thus increasing the sales while maintaining the stock in an orderly condition and preserving it from deteriora tion." 7
It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without depar't ing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing anyof-its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. In a store fixture, the combination of a cabinet embodying a plurality of compartments for the reception of merchandise and a closure hinged to said cabinet to swing about a substantially vertical axis and normally concealing said compartments, said closure comprising a frame, 'a transparent front rigidly mounted in said frame, and a sectional back mounted in and movable with said frame and adapted to support individual articles of merchandise, the separate sections of said back being individually remov ab e from s id fra ,tqscimul anequsly and collectively remove the" articles of 'mjerchan cli'sesecured'j thereto.
2. In a store fixture the combination of a cabinet embodyi 'ig aTpluralityfof compartments for the reception of merchandise and a closure hinged to said cabinet to swing about "a substantially vertical axis and normally concealing said compartments, said closurecomprising a frame, a transparent front rigidly no nnted in said frame and a backcompri'singa 'pIurality of sections arranged one above thener: anda a ted s support individualarticle's of merchandise, said back being mounted in and movable with said frame and saidsections being individually removable from said frame to i simultaneonsly QlI ovethe articles of merchandise secured thereto.
3. In astorfe fixture, a display case compr si ame 'hin mounte for swinging movement about a substantially vertical axis, a transparent front rigidly mounted in said frame and a back mounted in and movable with said frame and consisting of a plurality of. transverse members having channels therein, and a plurality of panels mounted between said members and adapted to support individual articles of merchandise, said panels being narrower than the distance between thebottoms of opposite channels whereby the panels are readily inserted and removed;
