Description

C. CAMPBELL.
ADJUSTABLE SURFACE GRAT APPLICATION FILED OCT. 21,
1,270,694. Patented June 25, 1918.
WITNESSES 4 I C lin Campbell IN VE N TOR AITORIIEYS" COLIN CAMIPBELL, OF RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.
ADJUSTABLE SURFACE GRATE-IBAB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 27, 1917. Serial No. 198,845.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLIN CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Surface Grate- Bar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to grate bars and has for an object the provision of an improved construction whereby the surface grate members may be easily detached or removed.
Another object in view is to provide a grate bar structure having a removable surface section provided with a depending regaining member coacting with a supporting In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of a detachable surface grate bar disclosing an embodiment of the invention, one of the sections or surface bars being removed.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through Fig. 2 on line 33.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a supporting bar which is provided with an opening or saddle 2 for accommodating the dumping bar of any suitable kind which-may rest on suitable journal bars, the same forming no part of the present invention. The supporting bar 1 is supplied with a plurality of openings or apertures 3 spaced predetermined distances apart so that the grate sections and surface bars 4 will be slightly spaced apart, as shown at the right in Figs. 1 and 2. In order that the supporting bar 1 may not be weakened at the apertures 3 the bar is provided with enlargements or thickened portions 5 extending a short distance downwardly from the upper surface. Below the enlargements 5 the bars 3 extend laterally to the surface of the bars so as to make a comparatively large opening 6 which is substantially filled by the depending lugs 7 of the respective surface bars 4 when the surface bars are in position. These lugs are provided with apertures 8 for receiving retaining key members, and also with notches 9 for receiving a tool when it is desired to remove any particular surface bar.
In addition to the surface bars 4 having depending lugs 7, feet 10 are provided, preferably at each end of the surface bars, as shown in Fig. 2, said feet resting on the supporting bar 1 and thereby providing a more even fitting of the surface bars and a more even expansion thereof when in use. The body of the surface bars 4 may be provided with any suitable openings 11 without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The supporting bar 1 and the various surface bars 4 and associate parts form part of the complete shaking grate and may be easily tilted or, if desired, turned over, as this is not usually possible in shaking grates. In addition, the same inventive idea may be embodied in a stationary long bar and surface bars 4 coacting therewith.
In forming the openings 3 restricted ends or end sections 11 are provided whereby when the depending lug 7 is placed in position it will engage the restricted end sections which present a comparatively small surface. This will allow an easy removal of the lug and surface bar whenever it should be necessary to substitute a new surface bar or to make any desired repairs.
What I claim is: a
1. A grate bar of the character described, comprising a supporting bar having openings extending from the upper surface, a surface bar for each of said openings, each of said surface bars having a depending lug substantially fitting said opening, said lugs being formed with an aperture for receiving retaining pins, and a transversely arranged notch at the bottom of each of said lugs for receiving a removable tool, said notches being above the bottom of the openings in said supporting bar.
2. A grate bar of the character described, comprising a supporting bar having openings extending from the upper surface, said openings being provided with restricted end sections, a surface bar for each of said openings provided with a depending lug adapted to fit into and engage said restricted sections whereby a comparatively small amount Ratented J une:25, 1918..
of the lugs are in engagement with the supporting bar so as to permit an easy removal.-
3. A grate bar of the characterdescribed, comprising a supporting bar having a plurality of openings extending from the upper surface downwardly and then laterally in opposite directions so thatthere will be a transverse aperture throughthe bar intersecting said openings, a surface bar for each .01 said openingsyeach of said surface bars having a depending lug substantially filling the respective openings, each of said lugs being formed With an aperture for receiving a retaining pin, said aperture in said lug be- COLIN CAMPBELL;
