Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, l/ViLnIAM V. ROBIN- SON, a citizen of the United States of Amer ica, residing at ()wosso, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Fire-Pots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had there in to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to fire pots for stoves and furnaces and consists in the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the fire pot of my improved construction; Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fire pot in assembled position.
A is the upper portion of the fire pot which is formed of an annular casting as is usual.
B are fingers secured to the section A and which form the lower portion of the fire pot. These fingers are so secured as to have a limited oscillatory movement so that in the shaking of the grate they will be slightly agitated, assisting in removing the accumulated ashes. I preferably construct the fingers B as shown, having at their upper ends the oppositely extending pintles C and C which are secured to the ring A by means of segmental attaching plates D. These plates together with the lower portion of the ring A are so fashioned as to form a groove E in which the pintles C and C are located, and with slots F through which the depending fingers project. The plates D may be held in position by bolts or rivets Gr and when thus secured will attach the fingers to the ring A but permit of the limited oscillation as described.
To hold the fingers B from moving outward under the stress of the fuel within the fire pot, a ring H is arranged to surround the lower portion of the same. This ring may rest upon supporting lugs I projecting from the sides of the ash pit I. The fingers are also preferably provided with spacing lugs J projecting from one side thereof adjacent to the plane of the ring, which lugs hold the adjacent fingers properly spaced. The bottom of the fire pot is a grate of any suitable construction indicated by K.
The construction described is one which will provide a relatively large open area of grate surface particularly advantageous in burning of low grade fuels, and furthermore, the oscillatory movement of the fingers will greatly assist the removal of the ashes.
The fingers B are preferably formed at their upper ends with inwardly projecting shoulders L which abut against coiiperating shoulders hi on the section A, and limit the inward movement of the fingers.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A fire-pot comprising an upper section, a series of depending fingers loosely secured to said upper section for inward and outward movement in the assembled position of the fire pot, a retaining ring surroiniding a lower portion of said fingers, and spacing means integral with the lower portions of said fingers.
2. A fire-pot comprising an upper section, a series of fingers having lateral projections at their upper ends, a slotted securing member embracing the upper ends of said fingers and engaging the lateral. projections thereof, said securing member being attached to said upper section and permitting in 'ard and outward movement of said fingers in the assembled position of the fire-pot, and means engaging the lower ends of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof.
3. A fire-pot comprising an upper section, a series of fingers depending tlierefroni, each of said fingers having a laterallyprojecting lug at its upper end and a spacing lug in its lower portion, a grooved and slotted securing plate engaging the upper ends of said fingers with said laterally-projecting lugs in the groove thereof, said plate being attached to said upper section and permitting inward and outward movement of said fingers in the assembled position of said the pot, and means engaging the lower portion of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof.
4. A fire-pot comprising an upper section, aseries of fingers depending therefrom and pivotally connected therewith for inward and outward movement in the assembled position of the fire pot, co -acting stops on said fingers and said upper section for limiting the inward movement thereof, and means surrounding the lower portions of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof.
A firepot, comprising an upper section,
a series of depending fingers pivotally secured to said upper section for limited inward movement, and co-acting means on said fingers and upper section for limiting the inward movement of the fingers.
6. A firepot, comprising an upper section, a series of depending fingers pivotally secured to said upper section for inward and outward movement, means at the upper end of said fingers for limiting the inward movement thereof, and means surrounding the lower end of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof.
7. A firepot, comprising an upper section, a series of depending fingers pivotally secured to said upper section for inward, outward and sidewise movement, means at the upper end of said fingers for limiting the inward movement, means surrounding the lower end of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof, and spacing means intermediate adjacent fingers.
8. A fire pot, comprising an upper section, a series of fingers having tapered lateral projections at their upper ends for governing sidewise movement of the fingers, a slotted securing member embracing the upper ends of said fingers and engaging the lateral projections thereof, said securing member being attached to said upper section.
9. A fire-pot comprising an upper section, a series of fingers depending therefrom, each comprising oppositely positioned laterally projecting tapering lugs at its upper end and a spacing lug in its lower portion, said lugs adapted to permit limited sidewise movement of said fingers, a grooved and slotted securing plate engaging the upper ends of said fingers with said lateral projecting lugs in the groove thereof, said plate being attached to the upper section, and means engaging the lower portion of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof.
10. A fire pot, comprising an upper sec-- tion and a segmental attaching plate secured thereto, the lower portion of said section and said plate being fashioned to form a peripheral groove, a plurality of fingers having their upper ends extending within said groove, said fingers having laterally projecting tapering portions adapted to engage said groove, co-acting stops on said fingers and said upper section for limiting the inward movement thereof, and means surrounding the lower portion of said fingers for limiting the outward movement thereof.
