DIME-BANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed Decemher 20,};917. SeriahNo. 208,967.
ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it knownthat 1, Frank A. S uirrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dime-Banks, of which the following is a specification.
invention is an improvement in dime banks, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified forholding a predetermined number of dimes, so that they will be .visiblebutcannot be removed until the box is unlocked by a particular form of key.
,In the drawings z- F .igure 1 is a tront View showing the manner of inserting the coin,
Fig. 2 .is a perspective view, looking at the F 1g. 8 is a similar vieW, looking at the Fig. 4 is a 2, looking in thedireotion of the arrows adjacent the line,
Figs. 5 and 6 are sections on the lines 5-5 and 6-6 respectively of Fig. 3, both views looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent the line,
Fig. 7 is a perspective vi ew of the box with the cover removed and looking at the inside,
Fig. 8 is a similar view of the cover looking at the inner side,
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the unlock- "ing device or key.
In the present embodiment of the invention a box is provided comprising a box body 1 and a cover 2. The box body is formed from a sheet of suitable material having the side edges and one end bent over upon the body in spaced relation to form inwardly extending flanges 3 at the said sides and end. The cover is adapted to he slid between the flanges 3 and the body, and the body has a series of openings lat each side of its centor for permitting the coins to be seen. while in place in the box. The coins are slipped in at the open end of the box and it will be noticed that there are notches or recesses 5 at the said ends each notch being in line with the adjacent series of openings 4-.
The inner end of the cover has an inward flange and the said flange has a portion at the center of the cover removed to form a notch 7 in the flange. The locking means for the box is adapted to engage this flange to section on the line llof Fig.
lockthe cover in place, and thesaid means comprises a Wire S bent into the form of a hairpin andsecured to the inner race oi the box body bottom, oneacli rib 9 extending longitudinallyv said ,body atthe center thereof. The body of the hairpinshaped lock is at the open end of the box, andarms lie uponv either side of :the rib and are se ured thereto inany suitable manner as for instance, by soldering free ends of'tlie arm diverge slightly, sufiioiently to eause them .to bear against the .iiange 6 on each side of the notch 7, as shown ,more particularly in Fig. 6, thus to lock the cover in place. hairpin-shaped lock form in addition a separating andholding means for the coin, so that the coinsat one side cannot pass over to the opposite side. The cover has struck-up lugs 10 at the end ,adjacentto the open end ofthebody, the said lugsextending inwardly and two pairs of lugs are provided, one pair on each .side of therenter.
The cover has depressed portions 11 at its center and these notches or depressions are adapted to engage the rib 9 to hold the cover up tightly against the flanges 3. A key 12 is provided for unlocking the box. This key is a substantially U-shaped member, and the free end of each arm is provided With an inwardly extending lug 13. The free ends of the arms are adapted to pass through openings 14 in the cover and the said openings are so arranged that when the arms of the key are inserted the lugs 13 will be on opposite sides of the locking member at the outer side of the arm. These slots 14 are of sufficient width to permit a limited movement of the key arms, suflicient to spring the arms of the locking member inward to release them from the flange 6 and to bring them into registry with the notch 7.
In use the coins are slipped into the box at the open end thereof and as each coin is inserted those in front of it are pushed farther toward the closed end of the box. When the box is filled it may be unlocked by means of the key. The improved banks are especially adapted for savings banks to encourage saving, and the key may be retained at the bank in order that they will not be unlocked until they are brought to the bank.
I claim 1. A device of the character specified comprising a box body and a cover, the body The rib and the a having its side edges and one end turned over upon the body to form flanges at said sides and end arranged in spaced relation with respect to the body, the cover being slidable between the flanges and the body, said cover having at its inner end a flange extending toward the bottom of the body, said flange being notched at its center, a U-shaped locking member secured to the body at the center thereof and extending toward the closed end and having resilient arms diverging slightly to engage the flange of the cover on each side of the notch, said cover having openings at the said diverging arms for permitting the insertion of a key for pressing the said arms toward each other.
2. A device oi the character specified, comprising a box body having one end open, and a cover slidably connected with the body for closing the top of the same, said cover having an inturned flange at its inner end and the body having locking means for engaging the flange, the flange having a cutaway portion at its center and locking means consisting of resilient arms engaging the flange at opposite sides of the cut-away portion, the cover having openings at the arms for permitting the insertion of a key to press the arms toward each other, said cover having means at the open end of the box for Copies of this patent may be obtained for permitting the entrance of a coin and for preventing the return of the coin.
3. A device of the character specified, comprising a box body having one end open, and a cover slidably connected with the body for closing the top of the same, said cover having an inturned flange at its inner end and the body having locking means for engaging the flange, the flange having a cutaway portion at its center, and locking means consisting of resilient arms engaging the flange at opposite sides of the cut-away portion the cover having openings at the arms for permitting the insertion of a key to press the arms toward each other.
4. A device oi": the character specified, comprising a box body having a sliding cover provided at its inner end with an inturned flange, the flange being cut away at its center, resilient arms secured to the box body and engaging the flange at opposite sides of the cut away portion when the cover is closed, the cover having openings near its inner end at the outer sides of the arms for permitting the insertion of a key to press the arms toward each other to release them from the flange.
