WILLIAM '1. LAZAR, 0F APPLETON, WISCONSIN.
DISPENSING-CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1'7, 1920.
Application filed May 21, 1919. Serial No. 299,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. LAZAR, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of 'Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dispensing-Con tainers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n containers for dispensing interleaved paper napkins, towels and the like wherein hingedly connected and matching semi-cylindrical portions operate to form a closed container having a longitudinal dispensing slot formed therein by matching of longitudinally disposed recesses in the free ends or .edges of said matching semi-cylindrical portions.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved dispensing container having improved means for the placing and threading of an interleaved paper napkin or towel package.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide an improved container of the character described having improved means for supporting an interleaved package of extremely thin and flexible paper napkins in such a positlon above a dispensing slot that said napkins or the like may be detached from the package and singly 'CllS- pensed through said slot without disturbing the remaining napkins or packages.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter more fully appear.
I accomplish these and several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the container in an open or receiving position;
Fig. 2 is a broken front elevation of Fig. 1 with the paper napkin package removed;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the container in a closed position; and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation disclosing one method by means of which the matching portions of the container may be locked together.
The. present. invention. is an improvement over PatentNo. 1,228,571issued to me on the 5th day of June, 1917, in which patent a dispensing container for dispensing leaves from an interleaved package is provided with means, in the form of struck up lugs, for imparting a slight arch or curvature to the bottom of the interleaved package. This type of container is well adapted for the heavier and more rigid types of paper, such as interleaved paper towels and the like.
But, I find from experience, that the thinner and more flexible packages comprising thin tissue paper napkins and the like will collapse when only slightly arched above the dispensing slot. Therefore, I have provided the present improvement which is adapted to retain a package of extremely thin inter leaved tissue paper napkins in a circular position and against the internal surface of a hollow cylindrical container which may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate. a hollow cylindrical container comprising hollow semi-cylindrical portions 2 and 3 each portion being hingedly connected at one longitudinal edge thereof to a longitudinal edge of the other portion as at a. The edge of each portion 2 and 3 opposite the hingedly connected edges is provided with a recess 6 and 7 respectively which match to form a longitudinal slot 8 when the portions 2 and 3 are closed as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The recesses 6 and 7 are formed by projecting inwardly a oortion of the outer walls or periphery of t e portions 2 and 3 respectively to form inwardly projecting flanges 9 and 10 respectively.
The ends of each portion 2 and 3 are also provided with outwardly extending flanges 11 and 12 respectively which are arranged to match or lie adjacent or upon each other when the portions 2 and 3 are closed as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The flanges 11 are provided with projecting pins 13 adapted for engagement with apertures 14 within the flanges 12 by means of which the portions 2 and 3 may be alined to form a hollow cylindrical container when said portions are closed one upon the other as disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.
Each flange 11 is likewise provided with a pivotally mounted latch 16 having a return bend or portion 17, which forms a U-shaped portion to engage and lock together the flanges 11 and 12 and thereby lock or retain the container 1 in a closed position.
However, it should be understood that any suitable locking device may be employed to retain the portions 2 and 3 in a closed position without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In placing a pile or package 18 of interleaved paper napkins within the container 1 the same is opened as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. In this open position the container may be placed horizontally or vertically to suit the convenience of the operator.
The package 18 of interleaved flexible tissue paper napkins is placed with the approximate longitudinal center thereof over the hinge 4' and the longitudinal edges of said package 18 are moved within each respective portion 2 and 3 and behind their respective inwardly projecting flanges 9 and 10 with one free edge of one of the paper napkins extending over one of said flanges as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
By closing the portions 2 and 3 upon each other the free end of the napkin is left projecting through the slot 8 and the package 18 is then bent or formed into a circular position adjacent the internal surface of the container 1 as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The latches 16 are then moved to cause the U-shaped or return portions 17 thereof to engage the outwardly projecting flanges 11 and 12 on the ends of the portions 2 and 3 respectively, which engagement, in conjunction with the engagement of the pins 13 of the flanges 11 with the apertures 14 of the flanges 12 will aline said portions 2 and 3 and retain them in a closed position.
The paper napkins are then withdrawn singly through the slot 8 in the usual and well known manner.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved coir tainer for dispensing thin tissue paper napkins from an interleaved package and supporting such package above a dispensing slot in a manner that said napkins may be readily and easily dispensed through said slot Without disturbing the remaining towels or the position of the ackage 18.
It is also evident that have provided a new and improved means for placing and threading a package of interleaved paper napkins within a dispensing container.
If desired the hinge l may be dispensed with as the halves of the container need only be alined when closed and this alinement is effected and retained by the engagement of the pins 13 with the apertures 1A operating in conjunction with suitable looking means for holding the halves 2 and 3 together, such as the latch 16 or its mechanical equivalent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is: p A
