j NI/ENTORS JOI-IN ROGERS FLANNERY AND IEIHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANUFACTURE OF STAY-BOLTS FOR BOILERS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21, 1917. Serial No. 150,197.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, JOHN R. FLANNERY and ETHAN I. DoDDs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Stay- Bolts for Boilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of staybolts for boilers and more particularly to such as are made in two parts welded together and provided with tell-tale holes,-the obj ect of our present invention being to so manufacture a staybolt of the character specified that the tell-tale hole shall be extended continuously and unobstructively from the inner end of the bolt to .a point Within the head at the outer end of the bolt.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tubular bar blank from which the staybolt is made; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the appearance of the bolt after the head has been formed; Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the manner of opening the closed portion of the bore at and near the headed end of the bolt; Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the completed bolt; and Fig.` 6 is a View illustrating a modification.
1 represents an iron bar having a central bore 2 and suitable for the manufacture of staybolts for boilers. The bar may comprise two vmating members 3, 4., welded together, as indicated in Fig. 2.
One end of the bar 1 will be subjected to the action of suitable forging dies whereby the metal will be upset and caused to form a head 5, which latter may have curved bearing faces such as are provided with flexible stay bolt structures. In the drawing we have shown a spherical head although this specic shape might be more or less modified. During the forging operation in forming the head 5, the central bore 2 which constitutes the tell-tale hole of the bolt will be closed within the head 5 and for a prohibitive distance inwardly from said head, as indicated at 6 in Fig. 3. To
reopen the portion of the bore thus closed, we bore the same, inserting a suitable drill. 7 through the headed end of the bolt as indicated in Fig. 4. The bore 2 will then be continuous from one end of the bolt to the other. We then permanently close the end of said bore at the headed end ofthe bolt, by means of a metal plug 8, so that the finished bolt 9 indicated in Fig. 5, will have a continuous bore or tell-tale hole 2 extending from the inner end of the bolt to the headed end thereof and closed within the head by means of the plug 8.
Instead of boring out the closed portion of the bore and then inserting a plug as above described, we may reopen a portion of the closed bore by inserting the drill through the inner end of the bore and terminating the drilling operation at a point within the headed end of the bolt as illustrated in Fig. 6.
I-Iaving fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. The herein described method of making a staybolt, consisting in forging a head at one end of a tubular bar, boring the headed bar to reopen the portion of the bore closed by the forging operation, and then permanently closing the end of the bore at the headed end of the bolt.
2. The herein described method of making a staybolt consisting in subjecting one end of a tubular bar to a forging action forming a head on said tubular bar and closing a portion of the bore therein, then reopening said closed portion of the bore through the headed end of the bar, and then securing a plug into said reopened bore within said head.
3. The method of making a staybolt, consisting in forging a head at one end of a tubular bar and rsimultaneously closing a portion of the bore of said bar, and reopenng said bore into the headed portion of the In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
