METHOD OF MAKING AND INSTALLING STAYBOLT STRUCTURES IN BOILERS.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mal'. 29, 1921.
Original application lediseptember 10, 1919, Serial No. 322,871. Divided and this application led April s, 1920. serial No. 372,291.
`United States, and residents of Pittsburgh,
in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making and Installing Staybolt Structures in Boilers; and we do hereby declare the`fOllowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethesame.
This invention relates to improvements in the method of making and installing staybolt structures in boilers,`-the same being a division of application for patent filed by us on the 10th day of September, 1919, Serial No. 322,871,-one object of our present invention being to provide a simple and efficient method of combining the head of a staybolt and its bearing member so that said head shall be permanently inclosed Within the bearing member but be capable of movement therein and so that said bearing member, with the bolt head inclosed therein, may be mounted in they boiler sheet in a manner to permit universal adjustment and to be subsequently secured to the boiler sheet, preferably by welding.
With this and other Objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features in the method of making and installing staybolt structures Jfor boilers, as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the steps of our improved method, and in said drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional'view illustrating the staybolt structure as lnstalled 1n a boiler, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views illustrating the manner of making the combined bearing plug and closure.
1 represents the outer sheet of a boiler and 2 the inner boiler sheet.
The; Outcr boiler sheet is made with an an opening 5El for the accommodation of the neck of the staybolt. The blank from which the plug or member 5 is made is provided with a plurality of V-shaped notches or recesses 6 and this blank is forged to the approximately hemispherical form shown in Fig. 2. The rounded head 7 of a staybolt 8 will be inserted into the hollow hemispherical body and inward pressure will be applied to the fingers 9 formed by 'the notches 6 until the side edges of said fingers come together as shown at 611 and the tool employed for `this operation will be suchthat the portion of the device formed by the fingers 9 will be curved in conformance with the curvature of the other portion of the device, and the latter will have the form of a sphere except at the portion thereof having the Opening 5n for the passage of the bolt. The plug or member 5 has internal dimensions which are appreciably greater than those of the bolt head 7 and when the latter is mounted on the seat 10 around and in prox imity to the opening 5, ample clearance space 11 will be afforded for the bolt head, and this is important in flexible staybolt structures.
The inner end portion of the staybolt is threaded as at 12 to screw through the inner boiler sheet, and said staybolt is provided at its inner extremity with an angular head 13 to receive a tool whereby the screwing of the bolt through the inner boiler sheet may be facilitated. After the staybolt shall have been installed, the head 13 will be removed and the -inner end of the bolt will be upset as at 111. In orderI to assist in withstanding the end pressure on the bolt during the upsetting operation and to relieve the screw threads from excessive hammering pressure, a body of soluble material 15, such as salt, may be packed in the clearanceV space within the hollow plug.
lt will be observed that the plug or member 5 forms a closure for the opening in the boiler sheet as well as a bearing member for the bolt head, and by mounting said member so that it may be universally movable, it can be adjusted in a manner to insure accurate alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets, whether said sheets be parallel with each other or at an angle to each other, and when the combined bearing plug and closure shall have been properly adjusted, it will be fig 2 Y, Y y -1 1,373,058
iirmly united to the outer boiler sheet by Y nsaid hollow body inwardly to inclose the bolt head and providea bearing within said hollow body for the bolt head, and leaving clearance space for the bolt head within said hollow body.
V2. The herein described method, consist- Aing in inclosing ay bolt head within a hollow plug having a bearing for said bolt head, and having a clearance space for the bolt head,l packing said clearance Vspace with soluble material, threading the bolt through an inner` boiler sheet, and upsetting the inner end of the bolt.
n 3. Theherein described method ,consisting in` notching a metal blank, forging said blank to form a hollow body closed at one end and open at the other end, inserting the head of a staybolt into said hollow body, bending the notched portion of the hollow body inwardlyV and forming an interior bearing for the bolt head and an exterior curved bearing surface for said hollow meinber in a bolt opening in a boiler sheet.
4. The herein described method consisting in permanently inclosing the head of a staybolt in a hollow body closed at one end and leaving a clearance space between the bolt head and the closed end of said hollow body, mounting Said hollow body in an opening in an outer boiler sheet so as to close said opentg and have initial universal adjustment therein, securing the bolt to an inner boiler sheet, and welding said hollow body to the outer boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
