BOUND COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 15 91%,
Application filed January 22, 1916. Serial Ho. 73,525.
To alhwhom it may concern:
Be -it known that I, JOHN MANNING VAN Hnosnx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamaica Plain, Sufl'olk county, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bound Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descript on of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to soft seamless,
collars of the folded or turned-down type, provided with a binding around its edges.
I In the production ofsoft folding collars from seamless fabric, and particularly from a; multiply fabric, which is folded to form the outer turned-down portion, this turneddown portion and the end tabs of the collar form abrupt angles with each other. Upon applying a continuous binding to the collar, it has been found that the bindingextends a sufficient'distance from thecollar, at this abrupt angle, to form an uneven and unsightly projection when the collar is folded for use. According to the present invention,
this objectionable feature is overcome and the collar is provided witha binding which is continuous from the folded portion to the tab, and which will nevertheless be taken up and held in a smooth and even manner at the angle formed by the turned-down portion and tab, when the collar is folded.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a'collar of the turneddown type, 'elnbOdying the invention;
Fig. 2 shows one end of the collar unfolded;
Fig. 3 shows one end of the collar folded,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view, with parts in section, illustrating the invention; and i .Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the central portion of the collar of Fig. 4:. i
The invention is illustrated as applied to a seamless multiply fabric, the material of which is sufficiently stifi' to maintain the shape of the collar without the employment of starch, while nevertheless suficiently pliable-to assume the necessary curvature to "'fit the neck of the wearer without undue endsthe tabs 2 formed as extensions of the inside band, and having therein the usual button holes 3. The outer turned-down portion d, in the usual collar construction, forms with the end tab 2; a right-angle or abrupt angle 6, similar to a right-angle. A. binding 5 is shown as applied to the collar and as extending from the turned-down portion tothe tab in a continuous manner. If the collar is cut from a single piece of fabric, of the desired shape,'and is then bound, the binding will, when the collar is folded, form a"'loose projecting portion at the abrupt angle formed"by the end tab and the-outer folding portion. According to the present invention, in order to overcome this objection, the collar is provided with a V-shaped notch 7 at such angle, and the binding material, when applied to the collar, enters this for this purpose.
Where the fabric is a nultiply fabric, it may with advantage be provided with a weakened portion where it is folded. Such a weakened fold is shown at 8, andmay be made as shownin. Fig. 5 by-omitting some of the threads of one or moreof the inner plies of the fabric. Where such a weakened portion is provided at the fold,-the V-shaped notch is preferably formed near the inner edge thereof, with the result that the collar, although having the binding taken up and somewhat gathered at said corner, isv not of materially increased thickness at this point.
I claim: 1. A folding collar having an outer folding portion and an end tab portion forming ,The V-shaped'notch is particularly adapted an abrupt angle with each other, and-shavmg a notch in the fabric at said angle, and 1 an edge binding for the tab and outer folding portion inclosin the edge of the tab'and folding portion ant arranged to be'taken up by said notch when the collar is folded; substantially as described;
2. A folding collar of multiply fabric having an outer folding portion and an end tab portion forming'an abrupt angle with each other, said collar having a weakened portion at its fold and having a notch in said weakened portion at said angle, and a binding for the tab and outer folding portion arranged to be taken up by said notch when the collar is folded; substantially as described. v
3'. A folding collar of multiply fabric of a weave sufliciently stiff to maintain the shape of the collar without the employment of starch andhavlng an outer folding or 7 taken up by sa1d recess turn-down portion and an end tab portion at said angle, said collar being provided with a fold portion of increased flexibility, and an edge bindin for the tab and outer foldin tab an folding; portion,
or notch when the collar is folded; substantially as described.
- In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature.
