Be it known that I, BRionT APICHELLA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Marion Heights Borough, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful fimproveniente in Cuffs for Mens Shirts, of

which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in mens shirts, and particularly to improvements in sleeve cuffs of the kind commonly known as soft cuffs of the turn-back variety.

In cuffs of this character as ordinarily constructed the meeting edges of the inner fold of the cuff proper are arranged, when closed, to lie with their inner faces in lapping engagement, and such edges are provided with button-holes for the passage of the cuff button, which also passes through button-holes in the outer folds of the cuif. The objection to this construction is that the cuff, even when held fully closed by the button, is liable to undesirably gap, and the cuff in many respects does not present a neat and finished appearance.

One object of the present invention is to provide a construction of cuff wherein these objections are avoided by providing the meeting edges of the outer folds of the cuff only with openings for the passage of the cuff button and constructing the meeting edges of the inner fold of the cuff to be fastened independently of the cuff button, whereby the cud will be kept closed and gapping at the meeting edges will be avoided.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cuff construction of the character described wherein the meeting edges of the inner fold are also adapted to overlap with the inner face of the outer edge overlying the outer face of the inner edge, combined with means for fastening the edges together in such relationship, whereby a positive closure of the cud and prevention of a gap is secured.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an edge view looking toward the outer side of a portion of the sleeve and cuff of a shirt embodying my invention,

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, l designates the sleeve of a shirt, provided with the usual placket having the meeting edges 2 and 3 and terminating in the cuff i composed of the inner fold 5 and outer fold 6, the latter being turned backward, as usual, over the outer surface of the inner fold. It will, of course, be understood that the cuff may be made in general of ordinary construction and of any desired number of plies of material, the difference between the improved cuff and cuffs of ordinary construction being in the features hereinafter described.

As shown, the meeting edge 2 of the sleeve placket may be provided with a button-hole 7 to receive a button 8 upon the meeting edge 3 of said placket, for the purpose of closing the placket at a point in proximity to the cuff, and, as shown, the inner fold 5 of the cuff is provided, in accordance with my invention, with extensions 9 and l0 which project beyond the normal line of the corresponding edges of the outer fold 6 of the cuff, which edges of said outer fold are provided as usual with button-holes 1l for the passage of the usual cuff button 12, which may be of the link type commonly employed.

The edges'9 and l0 of the inner fold 5 are adapted to overlap to close the placket portion of the cuff when the cuff is closed as in use, the edge extension 9 being arranged to overlap the end extension l0, with the surface of said edge extension 9 lying against the outer surface of the end extension l0, so that said edge extensions overlie each other in the general extension of the material of the cuff to complete the formation of a closed band, whereby the cuff will be completely closed and the formation of a gap or opening prevented. For the purpose of holding the edges 9 and l0 in such position, the edge 9 may be provided with a button-hole 13 to engage a button le on the edge 10, or any other suitable type of fastening means for Jche purpose may be employed.

It will thus be understood that in use theY inner fold of the cuii may be arranged to completely encircle the wrist oi' the wearer and be closed and held in closed position,

while the meeting edges of the outer fold of the cuff will be united exclusively of the meeting edges of the inner fold by the ordinary cuii' button, the arrangement being suoli that the edges of the outer fold are visibly united in the usual way while the edges of the inner fold are united in over" lapping relationship, thus making a neater connection and preventing any unsightly gaps.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description.

l claim as my invention:

1. A cuii" of the turn-down variety for shirts comprising a cuff body including anV inner fold and an outer i'oid, the inner fold having edge extensions which are adapted to overlap with the inner `face of the outer extension lying in contact with the outer face of the innerl extension when said extensions are brought into overlapping engagement, said extensions being provided with means for securing the same in overlapping relation, and the meeting edges of the outer Copies of fold being arranged to extend laterally beyond the line of the overlapping edges of the inner fold andY provided. with button holes, whereby said meeting edges of the outer fold may be connected independently of the meeting edges of the inner fold by an ordinary form of cuff button laterally beyond the overlapped and secured meeting edges of the inner fold.
