Description

N. A. McMEi-IKIN.
1001.. APPLICATION f ll-ED MAR. 14; BIB- Patented May 14;, mm
INVENTOR ATTOR N EY To all whom it may concern:
nnnrnn swans rennin QJFFEQEO MQMWKIN, F
Application filed'lliarcn re, 1916.
I by causing the end 12 thereof-to engage the Be'it known that I, NORMAN A. Mollllnn- KIN, a citizen ofUnited States residing at Woodsville, in the county. of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools,
- of which the following is a specification.
It is an object of this invention to provide a tool or implement which is adapted for use in thehousehold, or by campers, or' the like, and which combines in a convenient manner a number of useful. devices.
I attain the' above and other objects by means ofthe construction and combinatlon of the various parts' described which will be hereinafter more full 7 pointed out in the appende claims..'
In the drawin v I Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, a portion thereof being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my device. Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 indicates a straight handle, and 2 indicates a curved handle which is'continued in a reverse curve, as at 3, across the handle i, said, curved handle terminating 111 the aw n 4 which lies opposite the jaw 5 formed y the extended end of the handle 1. The handle 2, it will be noted, is pivoted to the handle -1 at the point of crossin by a rivet 6, both of said handles -1 and '2 eing cut away adacent the pint of-crossing, as at if and 2', so that their faces may lie in'the same plane;
As, clearly shown in Fig. 1, the jaw 4 of the handle 2 lies opposite .the jaw dot the handle 1. A flexible gripping member? is secured to the jaw 5 of the handle 1-, as at- 8, said strap adapted to be passed around the cover of'a pail, or the like, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear, and hasi-ts flee end adapted to pass through an aperture 4' rovided in the jaw 4 and be releas ably held by means'of serrations 9 adapted to co-act with a toothed pawl 10, It will be seen by moving the handle 3 and thejharidle 1 toward each other that the jaws a and -5 will be caused to approach each other, 1, thereby tightening the flexible gripping-j,
member 7 around the ail-cover.
1 Upon referring to t edrawinga it will be noted that a bar 11 is ivotally connected by the rivet 6 to the'hand e 1 and is normally disposed along the face of the handle 1 in order to be. out of the way. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, the said her 11 is Specification of a can opener 15.
In operation, it will be apparent that, by
described 1 and for exerting a levera e thereon.
; .means and the rec Serial 150. $3 3,156.
to the handle '1, the said handle 1 being further provided upon one grasping the device and movin the handle 1 and the handle 2 "towardeac other that the jaws 4 and 5 will be'caused to approach each other, thereb' tightening the flexible gripping member around the pail cover, and by SWll'l ing thebar 11- upon the pivot 6 until the en 12 thereof engages the top of the pail cover, as shown in dotted lines; it
end thereof with i will beseen that by lifting up upon the ,de-
vice that the said'end 12 will exert leverage whereby the same may upon-the pail cover, be removed from the pail.)
While, it is apparent from the above description taken in connection with the drawings, that l have. provided a device which is eficient for the operation described, I do not claim the exact construction shown therein but reserve the right to-resort to certam minorv changes and alterations which will not depart from the spirit and scope of l the appended claims;
ll. claim 2' 1. A tool of the character described including handles, a flexible'strip carried by one handle and en for embracing a pad cover, and a plate movably associated'with one of said handles for 'ng the other handle engagement with the top side of the cover I .2; A tool comprislng handles ivoted together, jaws formed by said han les beyond the point of pivot,a flexible band secured to one of said jaws, the second of said jaws having an aperture formed therein through which the free end of said flem ble band is adapted'to pass, and means pivoted within said aperture to said hand between said of said aperture when the handles are gripped and moved toward each other,v in order to contract said band around a pail cover and meansto exert leverageupon the pa: pover. a I 3 A to l-c mps a straight handle Mil and a curved handle pivoted together in crossed-relation, jaws ormed on the handles by extending the straight handle and 'reverslbl'y curving the curved handle beyondv the point of pivot, a flexible band having one end rigidly secured to one of said jaws, the
free-end thereof looped and adapted to pass "through an aperture formed inthe second.
of said jaws a toothed pawl -pivotedin' said aperture,- a a ted to co-act with teeth in the roof of said aperture to grip said flexible band against movement when the han dles are gripped and moved toward each other, in order tocontract said band around a pail cover, or the like, and means pivoted at thepoint of pivot of the handles to exert leverage upon the pail cover.
4.- .A tool comprising a straight handle and a curved handle reverslbly curving the curved handle beyond aperture adapted to co-act wit teeth formed the point of pivot, a flexible band having I oneend rigidly secured to one of said jaws,"
the free end looped and adapted to pass throu h an aperture formed in the secondof sai aws, a toothed pawl ivoted in said I ivoted together in crossed relation, jaws ormed on the han-, dies by extending the straight handle and.
i in thereof of said aperture to-grip said flexible band against movement when the handles are gripped and moved toward each other, in order to cpntract the said band around a pail cover, or the like, and a bar" pivoted at the point of-pivot' normally 1 ing adjacent one face. of ,thestraight hand e so as notito pro ect beyond the aw, said bar adapted to be swung on the pivot to project beyond said-jaws to exert leverage upon the pail cover.
. 5. A. tool of the character described, includmg crossed handles, a flexible strip. se-
