Description

T. B. HOPE ENVELOPED COMBINATION RECORD, INVOICE, RECEIPT, AND SHIPPING T AG. APPLICATION FILED APR. 19, 1915. 4
Patentd Apr. 30, 1918.
lb mum filing of flap, or folder secfion, when detached i i specification of Letters Patent.
B. HOPE. OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
,l atented Apr. 30, lldltd.
Application filed A ril 19, wit. Serial No. 22.526.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. THOMAS Horn, a citizen of the l'nited States, residing at (hicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin lEnveloped Combination Record, llnvoice, Receipt, and Shipping Tags, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
a simple and novel device which maybe employed as a tag but shall be capable of carrying memoranda. records, receipts, invoices, as well as shipping directions or other notations for which tags are usually employed and protect such records. etc. against weather and against inJury or effacement through contact with exterior objects and against grease and dirt on the hands of those through whom the tag pasms.
.The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter he pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for afull' understanding 4 a5 be of any size and shape the tags of various kinds now have or of any size and shape that may be required by the work the device is to do. Attached to one end of the member l is amember, 2, substan- 5o tially as long as the memberl and preferably of the e size and shape. Attach The object of my invention is to produce folded backupon the member 1 and is held in this position by an eyelet, 4:. passing through the same and through the underlying body section. The eyelet is preferably placed at an appreciable distance from the fold between the sections 1 and 3. a sufficient space bet-ween the eyelet and the fold being ordinarily obtained by placing the eyelet at about the center of the clamp section. Extending inwardly from the edge of the flap section 2 at the end opposite the end which is joined to the body section 1, is a notch. 5. which is so located relatively to the side edges of the flap as to permit. it to register with the eyelet when the free end of the flap is inserted underneath the clamping section and the length of the notch being such that the end of the flap section may abut against the fold between the sections 1 and 3. Furthermore. the notch is preferably made wider than the diameter of the eyelet so that the material of which the clamping section is made will be given an opportunity in the vicinity of the eyelet to bend outwardly when the end of the flap section is introduced. in case the eyelet be driven so tightly as to press the center of the flap section tightly against the body section.
Both sides of the sections 1 and '2 may be employed to carry datznif desired, but,
whatever is carried on the two inner faces or sides is edect-ua-lly concealed and shielded when the free end of the flap section is inserted under the clamp section. The device may be attached to an object of any kind bv a cord, 6, or other device passing through the eyelet which thus serves not only as a fasteneing device for the clamp section but also as a receiver for the tag attaching device. Furthermore, the eyelet serves as a centering device for the free endof the flap sectionand prevents lateral move ment thereof. This, with the steadying and locking effect of the engagement of the free edge of the flap section with the bend or fold between the body section and clamp section makes the device windproof so that there will be no danger that the flap section will become loose or partly loose when exposed in windy weather.
In some cases it will be found advantageous to perforate the flap section near the free end, to make it easy to file the flap section when it is severed from the body of the tag. In the arrangement illustrated, there are two perforations, 7 and 8, one on each side of the notch 5.
Asa shipping tag and informal invoice, C. O. D., or receipt for delivery, the enveloped section' of the tag afi'ords ample room for memoranda such asdate of orderorder nu1nberquantity ordered-quantity shipped-amount to followsizeetc., all of which, and sometimes more, is actually demanded by modern business methods; the same being now taken care of by involved systems including separate and distinct forms of stationery in addition to a shipping tag proper and much clerical work. The greatest value of the device is, however, expected to develop in factory, shop and storage, where tags containing important data and valuable records, in many cases the only means of identification, are indispensable and which, because of the careless rough handling and exposure to which they are subjected are usually damaged or utterly destroyed before they have performed half the services expected of them.
Another use to which my invention may be put is that of a mailing card, circular or other device which will go through the mails.
VVhile I have illustrated and described with particularity only asingle preferred form of my invention and recited a few uses thereof, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described and to uses recited; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims and all uses to which said invention may be put.
I claim:
1. A tag comprising a body section, a flap section connected to the body section at one end of the latter, a clamp section attached to the opposite end of the body section, the body section and the flap section being of substantially the same length and the clamp section being quite short, the clamp section being folded back on the body section, an
eyelet assing through the clamp section and the b0 ysection, and the free end of the flap section having a notch extending inwardly from the edge thereof far enough to permit the latter to be brought into proximity to the fold between the clamp section and the body section when the free end of the flap section is inserted beneath the clamp section.
2. A tag comprising a body section, a flap section connected to the body section at one end of the latter, a' clamp section attached to the opposite end of the body section, the clamp section being folded back on the body section, an eyelet passing through the clamp section and the body section at some distance from the fold between the same, and the free end of the flap section having a notch extending inwardly from the edge thereof in position to register with the eyelet when the free end of the flap section is inserted beneath the clamp section, said notch being longer than the diameter of the eyelet.
3. A tag comprising a body section, a flap section connected to the body section at one end of the latter, a clamp sect-ion attached to the opposite end of the body section, the body section and the flap section being of substantially the same size and shape and the clamp section being quite short, the clamp section being folded back on the body sec tion, an eyelet passing through the body section and the clamp section at about the middle of the latter so as to lie at some distance from the fold. the free end of the flap section having a notch extending inwardly from the edge thereof in posit-ion to receive the eyelet when the free end of the flap section is inserted under the clamp section.
4. A tag comprising a body section, a fiap section connected to the bodv section at one end of the latter, a clamp section attached to the opposite end of the body section, the body section and the flap section being of substantially the same size and shape and the clamp section being quite short, the clamp section being folded back on the body section, an eyelet passing throughthe body section and the clamp section at about the middle of the latter so as to lie at some distance from the fold, the free end of the flap section having a notch extending inwardly from the edge thereof in position to receive the eyelet when the free end of the flap section is inserted under the clamp sec tion, said notch being longer and also Wider than the diameter of the eyelet.
. 5. A device of the character described comprising a body section, a flap section, and a clamp section made of a-single strip of material adapted to be folded; a fastening device extending through the clamp section and the body section to produce a jaw open toward the flap section; and the fia section having a notch in its end to permit metros the end of the flap sectionto straddle said fastening device when the free end of the flap sectlon is inserted in said jaw.
6. A device of the character described 5 comprising a body section, at flap section, and
a clamp section made of a single strip of material adapted to be folded; a fastening device extending through the clamp section toward the flap section; the flap section ing long enough to engage with the fold between the other two sections when its free end is inserted in said jaw; and said flap section having in its free end a notch adapting itto clear said fastening device.
