Be it known that I, ARCHILL J. LE CLAIR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in yllVelt-lnnersoles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention particularly relates to certain improvements on lthe welt innersole shown in my prior patent Serial No. 1,222,309, dated April 10, 1917.'
1n the inner sole of my said prior patent, the textile strip which was attached to the outer or bottom section of the sole, was not offsuliicient strength to meet all conditions or requirements, and the lip also did not offer sufficient resistanceto the guiding devices of the welter to satisfy the operator. `Certain difficulties were alsoV encountered in shaping the lip into its upstanding position.
rlhe objects of my present invention are to increase the strength and durability of the parts which hold the shoe in shape, to
form the lip to which the upper is at tached so that its stiifness will be greatly increased, thereby enabling it to resist the pressure of the guiding devi-ces of the welter thereagainst to the desired extent, .and to improve theinethods of making the innersole, so that the facility with which it may be manufactured may be substantially increased.

As shown in the drawing, the innersole comprises an inner section t .of complete sole Vshape and an outer section b, of similar shapeV about the heel, but reduced in size about the shank and fore -part by slightly more than the width of the usual vmargin between the sole edge and the lip;
a textile covering c being adhesively connected to the outer surface of the outer section, and the two sections being adhesively connected and preferably formed of some inexpensive material, as leather board, as described in my said prior patent.

is provided, which is of sufficient length to extend throughout the reduced shank and `fore-pert portions of said outer section and is attached thereto, said strip being folded so that it is throe-ply, one edge portion being doubled in between the other edge portion and the middle portion.
The method which I employ in making the inner sole is as follows: rlhe tape, folded as above described, is first. attached to the outer section to which the textile covering has vbeen previously attached, by placing one edge portion of the tape on the inner side of said section or side which is to liol next the inner section a, and the doubled opposite edge and middle portions g and .e on the oppositeiside there-` of, to which the textile covering@ is attached, and by sewing the same through and through by stitches c, which extend perpendicularly to the outer section b, through all of said portions of the tape and said section and covering c adjacent the edges thereof, as indicated in Fig. 8. `As shown in this iigure, the tape will then be in the plane of the sole section, at this stage of the operation, and provides a flexible lip which projects beyond the edge of the sole section.` A flexible lip is thus formed on the `edge of the sole section which is then bent about the edge thereof, toward its outer side, into a position approximately perpendicular to its outer surface.
This step in the operation is performed, and the lip is secured in an upright position by pressing the lip into this position by hand, and then holding it in this position by pressing the edge of the sole section against the bed of a sewing machine, as indicated in et, and sewing the tape portions g, and e together by stitches f, which pass therethrough perpendicularly to the stitches c, or in a direction parallel to the surface of the sole section, as indicated in Fig. 5. ln practice the lip is turned up as it is fed to the sewingmechanism so that the operation may be rapidly performed on an ordinary chine. The lip thus upturned will be held in upturned position by the stitches f for the following reason. When the lip is turned up, as above described, the relative positions of the sections of the material are changed, one sliding over the other, so that cylindrical table sewing ma` the outer section a will be somewhat shorter than the inner section with relation to the row of stitches e, and these tape portions will be fastened, one on the other, by the stitches f, while thus held, so that they will be prevented from sliding back,V one o n the other, to their original relative positions,

The edge'portion fr thus acts to support the lip in upright position, for, to bend the lip back to the horizontal position would tend to compressl the portion thereof between the stitches e and f which extend about the edge of the sole section b. As a result, an upstanding-V lip will be formed which is of suiiicient strength and stiffness to'resisteffectively the force with whichit is pressed against the guiding devices of the welter when theV shoe is welted, sothatV the conditions encountered by the operator'are no different than with the ordinary Gem innersole, or similar innersoles which have previously been extensively employed. Moreover, a particularly strong lip is provided byk this construction, as it is three-ply, so that it will be of sufiicient strengthto meet all conditions, and a nonstretchable innersole will be produced.
After the lip has been attached and upturned, as indicated in Fig. 5, the innersole section a is adhesively attached to the outer section b, as in my said prior patent. claim:-
1. A vwelt innersole comprising a sole shaped inner section, an outer section connected thereto and having the edge of its shankl and fore-part portions disposed at a substantial distance within the correspondsubstantial distance within the corresponding'portions of the inner section, a lip comprising a strip ofk textile material folded longitudinally and arranged with its edge portions at opposite sides of the said edge portions of said outer section, and stitched thereto, said strip extending laterally beyond the edge of said outer section and bent outwardly therefrom at approximately right angles thereto and having said extending portions stitched together, the stitches which attach the strip to tie sole section and those which attach the strip portions together being disposed at approximately right angles to each other.
3. A welt innersole comprising a sole shaped inner section, an outer section connected thereto and having the edge of its shank and fore-part portions disposed at a substantial distance within the corresponding portion of the inner section, and a strip of textile material longitudinally folded and arranged astride, and with its edge-portions overlapping and stitched to the edge portions of said outer section, the edge portion of said strip, extending from between said sole sections, being bent across the edge of the outer section and the opposite edge portion thereof being bent in the same direction, said edge portions being stitched together adjacent said outer section to provide a permanently outwardly projecting lip.
4. A welt innersole comprising a sole shaped inner section, an outer section connected thereto' and having the edge of its shank Vand fore-part portions disposed at a substantiall distance within the corresponding portion of the inner' section` and a strip of textile material longitudinally folded, so that one edge portion is disposed between the other edge portion and the intermediate p0rtion thereof, said strip being stitched to the edge portion of said outer section with one of its said edge portions at one side of, and adjacent the said edge of said Outer section and the other edge portion and the intermediate portion at the opposite side thereof, to form a lip arranged to extend beyond the edge of said outer section, said lip being bent away from the inner section at a sharp angle, to project beyond the outer surface of the outer section, the projecting portions of the strip forming said .lip being secured together in bent position by stitches passing therethrough beyond the said edge of the outer section.
