INVENTOR WITNEssEs ATTORNEY EDWARD W. MeDERMOK'IT, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
ROPE-GRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. 3d, 191%..
Application led July 18, 1917. Serial No. 181,351.
To all fwwm t may concern:
Be it known that 1, EDWARD W. MODER- Mo'rr, a citizen of the United States, residat Waukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Rope-Grips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved rope grip for gripping and holding a clothes line or other similar rope which is drawn taut, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple and by means of which a clothes line or other rope may be securely held at any desired tension.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a rope grip constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same at right angles to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail elevation, showing` a modified construction of the jaw.
1n the embodiment of my invention 1 provide an arm 1 which has an eye 2 near one end to enable the same to be attached to a post or other suitable supporting object and is provided at the opposite end with a gripping member 4 which projects from one side thereof, is segmental in form and has a substantially semi-circular roughened face 5. Said gripping member is formed with a flange 6 at the outer side, which is spaced from the arm and is also provided at its ends with a pair of curved retaining hooks or lugs 7 1n practice the arm, together with the gripping member, is preferably a single casting.
I also provide a jaw 8 which is pivotally mounted on the same side of the arm 1 as the gripping member, the pivot 9 of the said jaw being cast with the arm. The pivot may, however, be cast with the jaw 8, as shown at 9a in Fig. 4. The free end 10 of the jaw, which is opposed to the curved surface 5 of the gripping member, is tangential to a circle concentric with the pivot 9 and constitutes a cam and is provided with serrations 11.
V-Capzilea et this patent may be obtained for The rope is placed around the gripping member, engaged on the surface 5 thereof and held between the flange 6 and the arm 1, theJ curved lugs 7 serving to engage the rope and to hold the same in place on the gripping member. When the rope has been drawn as tightly as desired, the jaw 8 is turned to engage its serrated camming end with the rope so that the latter is firmly gripped between said jawand the gripping member around which the rope is drawn and the tension of the rope is exerted also on the jaw so that the more strongly the rope draws upon the gripping j aw the more eifectually the latter presses against and grips the rope. When it is desired to release the rope from the grip the jaw 8 may be readily and manually turned out of engagement with the rope, as will be understood. 1 also show a spring 12 which is secured to one side of the arm 1 as at 13 and which spring bears against the rear Y side of the jaw, said spring serving to normally hold the jaw in gripping position. The use of the spring is, however, optional and the same can be dispensed with if preferred.
The arm is provided with lugs 14 which extend from o posite sides thereof and are spaced from the curved lugs 7 the space 15 admitting the passage of the rope between the lugs 7, 14, and facilitating adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:-
A. rope grip comprising an arm having a fixed gripping member on one side thereof, said gripping member being provided with a substantially semicircular rope engaging and guiding surface, and a flange at the outer side of said rope engaging surface and spaced from said arm, said gripping member being also provided at its opposite sides with curved lugs which project from the ends of the flange and serve to engage.
the rope and prevent the same from slipping from said gripping member, and a jaw pivotally mounted on the same side of said arm as said gripping member, said jaw being provided at its free end with a cam surface and engaging the rope and causing the rope to be gripped between said camming surface and said gripping member.
1n testimony whereof I aix my signature.
EDWARD W. MGDERMOTT.
