Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. DE POINT and ERNEST C. VAN Hun, citizens of the United States, residing at Sodus, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to pipe vises, and more particularly has reference to a post pipe vise.
As the primary object, this invention contemplates the provision of means'acting in conjunction with the base of a pipe vise for removably clamping the base to a suitable supporting post in such a manner that the vise may be quickly secured thereto and maintained in position to conveniently receive a pipe.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide rigid post-engaging jaws on the base with which cooperates a movable post-engaging jaw; to mount a chain-engaging member on the clamping screw which operates the movable jaw and to provide means for actuating the clamping means.
A still further object of our invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, eflioient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of our invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification. I

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, we provide a base 1 on the outer face of which is arranged a pipe vise. Although this vise itself forms no particular part of this invention it will be described in order that a thorough understanding thereof will be readily apparent. Between the integrally formed ears 2 is pivotally mounted one end of the supporting frame 3, of substantially U- shaped configuration. A catch 4 is pivoted on the free side of the frame and is adapted for removable engagement with spaced ears 5 also integral with the base. A rigid pipe engaging jaw 6 is integral with the base intermediate the ears while a movable pipe engaging jaw 7 is slidably -mounted in the frame being adjusted by means of a clamp screw 8 adjustably mounted on the intermediate portion of the frame andgrotatably mounted in the movable jaw as is apparent upon reference to Fig. 1. A handle 9 on the outer end of the screw 8 serves to adjust the movable jaw 7 into engagement with a pipe 10.
In order to removably connect the visecarrying base 1 to a suitable post 12, we have formed integral with the inner face of the base adjacent the respective ends thereof transverse rigid jaws 13 the inner edges of which are curved and serrated so as to conform to the outer face of a post when in engagement therewith. A movable post-engaging jaw 14 is adapted to be arranged against the opposite side of a post 12 in a manner that the curved and serrated edge 15 will engage the post. A screw bar 16 is 1'0- tatably mounted in the jaw. A chain engaging member 17 is adjustably engaged by the screw bar 16, the respective ends of the member 17 terminating in slotted hooks 18 for receiving the links 19 of chains 20. The inner ends of the chains are pivotally connected between spaced ears 21 extending in opposite directions from the opposite sides of the base 1, suitable fastening devices 22 serving to hold the chains 20 in engagement with the base. In order to operate 'the screw bar 16 we have rigidly connected a handle 23 to the outer end thereof.
The operation of our invention is as follows Assuming that the base 1 which carries the pipe vise is arranged against the post 12 so that the rigid jaws 13 are in engagement therewith and that the chains 20 are connected to the side thereof, the movable postengaging jaw 14 is arranged adjacent the opposite side of the post and the chain engaging member 17 is arranged adjacent the jaw 14: so that the thin links of the chains 20 will be arranged between the slots in the hooked ends while the latter will prevent the large or wide links from becoming accidentally disengaged. Now by rotating the handle, the movable jaw will be forced into engagement with the post, thereby securely and removably maintaining the vise on the base in a convenient position.
Although we have shown and described the referred embodiment of our invention we esire it to be understood that we are not to be limited to the exact details shown, however, we desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement of the cooperation of the post-engaging jaws and the means for operating the jaws whereby they may hold the base in position.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that we have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed on the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description .and accompanying drawings compre end only the general embodiment of our invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and ar- A device of the character described ineluding a vise-carrying base, post-engaging jaws integral with the base, chains connected to the sides of the base, a chain-engaging member having the respective ends slotted for receiving the links of the chains, a screwbar adjustably mounted in the chain-engaging member, a post-engaging jaw forming a bearing for the screw-bar, and a handle rigid with the screw-bar for consequently holding the base in position.
