PISTON-RING PLIEB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JonN EDWARD Kuncnt, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, York county, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-- which is adapted for engaging both ends of the ring whether the bevels of the same be disposed in one direction or the other.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide such a tool constructed to engage the ring at the ends and on opposite faces thereof, employing but few parts and which will not require any special skill in use.
The invention is disclosed by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view thereof,
Fig. 2 a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 an end view with contact heads in one position and indicated in another position, and
Fig. 4 a detail perspective view showing the construction of the contact heads.
Referring to the construction in further detail, and with like reference characters designating corresponding parts in the different figures, the pliers consist of a pair of levers 5 pivotally connected together at the point 6, and having handle members 7 and the pair of jaws 8, as shown.
Each aw 8 is formed with a tubular end portion 9 having a bushing 10 secured there in at the outer end and providing a bearing for the stem 11 that carries the ring engag ing member 12. A spring 13 is fitted on the inner end of each stem 11 and normally holds said member 12 against the end of the jaw 8 under tension.
Each of the ring engaging members 12 is constructed in the form of a block and is cut-away as at 14: (see Fig. 1), to provide an inclined face 15 adapted to engage with the end surface Aof the ring B, as shown. The end portion of the block 12 V Specification of Letters Patent.
has a curved surface that extends slightly beyond the face 15 providing a lip or'lug 16, and said lip 16 is adapted to slightly overlie the end A of the piston ring B as indicated, and thus the ring ends are positively held on opposite faces by the jaws during the expanding operation. 7
The tubular portions 9 are extended be yond the recesses and lie substantially flush with'the end surfaces 12 and thereby provide retaining portions 19 that engage with the edges of the ring ends adjacent the points thereof. Said members 19, together with the engaging portions 15 and 16 thereby secured, hold the ring while the same is being expanded for removal.
It is proposed to adapt the device for engaging with the ends of the ring to expand the same for removal, whether said ends are cut on one diagonal or the other, and, for this purpose each of said ring-engaging member 12 is adapted to be turned through an angle of substantially ninety degrees (90). To this end the stem 11 of each block'12 carries a thumb pinlZ secured to the inner end thereof and working within a double slotted aperture 18 formed in the tubular portion 9 of each jaw. The respective slots of said apertures are disposed to receive the pin 17 in one position or the other, thereby holding the member 12 in position for engaging with the end of the piston ring.
In the use of the device, the two jaws 8 are positioned to insert the members 12 between the ends of the piston ring, and with the projecting portions 15 the surfaces 12 and lips 16 engaging said ring at opposite points, the ring may be expanded by closing the handle 7.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and ar rangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Piston ring pliers comprising a pair of pivoted jaws having handles, and adjustable members carried by said jaws respectively constructed to engage the piston ring on opposite surfaces at the end portions thereof,
substantially as set forth.

Piston ring pliers comprising a pair of pivoted jaws having handles, members swiveled on said jaws adapted for bringing the same active faces to engage the respective ends of the ring at different angles, and said members having cut-away portions providing elements to engage on opposite surfaces of the ring at the end portions thereof, substantially as set forth.
6. Piston ring pliers comprising a pair of pivoted jaws having handles, a pair of block members having stems swiveled in said jaws, said blocks having inclined surfaces and formed with elements for engaging with opposite surfaces of the piston ring at the end portions thereof, and means for adjustmg and holding said blocks to bring said inclmed'surfaces to engage the rmg at different angles, substantlally as set forth.
7. Piston ring pliers comprising a pair of jaws having handles, said jaws constructed with tubular and slotted portions; and a pair of blocks havin stems swiveled within said tubular portions and adapted for adjustment to bring the same active faces thereof to engage the ring in different angular positions, said blocks being cut-away to provide inclined surfaces and projecting lugs to engage opposite surfaces of the piston ring at the end portions thereof, substantially as set forth.
8. Piston ring pliers comprising a pair of jaws having handles, said jaws formed at their ends to provide surfaces correspondii'lg with the respective ring ends, and having projecting portions adapted to engage the opposite edges of the ring adjacent to the points, and the edges of the side surfaces, substantially as set forth.
9. Piston ring pliers comprising a pair of jaws having handles, said jaws having the end portions thereof constructed to provide inclined faces to engage with the respective ends of the piston ring, one side of each jaw being extended to engage the opposite edges of the ring adjacent to the points thereof, and lips formed on the end surfaces of the jaws adapted to overlie one side of the ring immediately adjacent to the end surfaces thereof, substantially as set forth.
