D. L. HARTZMAN.
COMBINATION TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 15, 1911.:

INVENTCR ZZYI/Z'QYLh QZ'ZZ 772472 ATTORN EY um TED sT TEs PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. l-IARTZMAN, on DOVER, OHIO. I
coivmnmrroimroon To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. HARTZMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the/county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to pliers and more particularly to a device to be used as a combination pliers and wrench and the primary object of the invention is to provide a Structure involved in retaining the jaws of the plier in a position whereby the jaws may be pivotally moved when the same are employed as pliers and be held in fixed position when the jaws are employed as a wrench.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a jaw carrying pin associated with an accessory jaw having a slot formed therein whereby the relative positions of the jaw governed by the association of the pin with the slot will determine the use of the jaws as a pair of pliers or a wrench.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a pliers which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pliers showing the jaws in position whereby they may be rotated for movement toward or away from each other.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaws in position for retaining them in fixed position whereby the jaws may be employed as a wrench.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals the two jaws 1 and 2 are of the usual construction having their approximate faces provided with the gripping teeth 3. Each of the jaws 1 and 2 is provided with the usual handle 4 which may be manipulated for opening and closing the jaws.
The jaw 1 is provided with an opening in which is rigidly fixed one end of a pin Specification of Letters Patent. Patented DC. 25,1917. Application filed January 15, 1917.
Serial No. 142,511.
5-and this pin is of hexagonal configuration in cross section. The complementaljaw-2 is provided with an elongated slot 6 the width of which is equal to the distance across the corners of the said hexagonal pin 5. The jaw 2 is therebv permitted to move a distance equal to the length of the slot 6, and the length of the slot should be considerably greater than the diameter of the pin whereby relative movement of the jaws will be permitted. One end of the slot is shaped to form a semi-hexagonal end providing flat surfaces to fit and receive one-half of the hexagonal pin 5, and the opposite end of the slot is round, for permitting the jaw to rotate around the pin when the pin is disposed at this end of the slot.
It will be obvious that when the jaws are in position as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing the jaws may be rotated by virtue of the position of the pin 5 in the round end of the slot 6. It is in this position that the jaws are used as pliers. Fig. 2 of the drawing shows the position of the jaws when they are employed as a wrench; and it will be seen that when the jaw 2 is moved so that the semi-hexagonal end of the slot 6 is in engagement with the hexagonal pin 5 relative movement of the jaws will be prevented and they may be thus fixed for use as a wrench.
From the foregoing it. will be observed that a very simple and durable pair of pliers has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A combination tool comprising a pair of complementary jaws, one of the said jaws having an elongated slot of semi-hexagonal configuration at one end, the said slot being semi-circular at its opposite end, a hexagonal pin, carried by one of the said complemental jaws and associated with the said slot and adapted to be disposed in either end of the said slot according to the position of the said jaws, the said slot being of a width equal to the distance across the corners of'the said hexagonal pin.
2. A combination tool of the character described comprising a pair of complemental jaws, one of the jaws having a hexagonal opening, a hexagonal pin driven into the said opening and rigidly held by the said jaw, the corresponding jaw being provided with an elongated slot of semi-hexagonal configuration at one end, the opposite'end of the said slot being semi-circular, the slot being of 'awidth equal to the distance across the corners of the saidheXagonal-pin, the latter being projected through the said slot and adapted to .be received and fit in the said semihexagonalend of tbeslottomaintain the jaws against movement and adapted to be received in the said opposite circular end df t lie said slo t for permitting pivotal navy) L.
