WRENCH.
Specification of ietters Eatent.
Patented Apr. 16,- 1918.
Application filed September 20, 1916. Serial No. 121,240.
To all echom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST-Lib, a sub-' ject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Eureka, .in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and particularly to Wrenches of the threaded handle bar type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the type wherein improved means is employedfor mounting the various movable parts in the wrench proper, wherein the various arts are prevented from becoming deranged, when in use, wherein the movement of the jaws both inwardly andoutwardly of the shank is positive, and wherein the wrench may be quickly, easily and with but little effort adjusted properly.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel iormation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrate/din the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the; claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 with the invention;-
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal. sectional view taken through theimp'roved wrench;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken 33 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated bythe arrows; and
Fig. d is a similar view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow v Referring nowto the drawings, 5 indicates the wrench shank, and is formed at one end with oppositely extending jaw portions 6 and 7, and the shank is reduced and rounded for the major portion of its length and inwardly from its opposite end as shown. A head 8 is formed at the lower end of the shank 5, and the said shank is grooved as at 9 adjacent the juncture of the head with the reduced shank portion. The shank 5 is provided with a centrally arranged slot 10, the latter extending from adjacent the headed end of the shank t opposite end of the same. his slot'extends diametrically through the reduced portionof the.s halilsz li,and the stem portion 11 of broken or jammed 1s a side elevation, parts broken away, of a wrench constructed 1n accordance on line rough and to the I a sliding member is arranged within the said slot so as to move longitudinally thereof. Tlns stem is provided at its outermost end with an enlargement, the same constituting oppositely disposed portions 12 and 13,-
:tor cooperation with the jaw portions 6 and 7 res ectively of the shank 5. The edges of the sh the ends of the slot 10 are provided with inclined teeth 14, adapted to be engaged by teeth 15 projecting from the inner periphery of a rotating grip or sleeve 16 inolosing the lower portion of the shank 5.
The upper ends of thissleeve fit within an annular shoulder formed upon the shank 5 adjacent the juncture of the larger with the smaller portions. thereof. To hold the sleeve 16 upon the shank, a pin 17 is driven through the same, and the medial portion of the pin rests within the groove 9 formed at the uncture of the head 8 with the reduced portion of theshank 5 of the wrench. A set screw 18 is threaded through the reduced portion of the shank 5, and'enga es at its inner and within a slot 19 dispos longitudinally of the stem 11. This, screw limits the outward movement of thepaovable jaw and prevents the device from heaoming aecid'en-.
tally dismembered.
The portions constituting the jaws 7 and ank or stem 11 which protrude beyond 11 to move outwardly of the shank5, and
reverse rotationof the sleeve will force the stem inwardly. The sleeve is held in positive connection with the shank 5, and yet is capable of rotating freely thereon. It will be understood, of course, that the teeth 14: and 15 upon the stern and sleeve respectively are always intermeshed, so that the device will instantly operate upon rotary movement being delivered to the sleeve.
While the present disclosure is that of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that various changes in the minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, if desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention make such variation in constructien is here by reserved What is claimed is;
n a Wrench, a shank having a central 10ngitudina]. skirt, one endof said shank being cyiimirica; and 0:? reduced size, the said re dueed enfii'ioeing provided with an annular groove, a rotatable sleeve inciosing said shank, a pin extending through said sleeve I and resting in said groove, a stem errar ged Wlthin vsemi siot and being capable of sliding iOIIglilfldiDfliiy therein, the edges of self sfiem projecting beyond said slot, tinescis on said edges, a shortthread upen the interior 025 said sleeve engaging said stem threads, the said stem having a longitudinal groove, and a, screw extending through said shank and engaging in said groove.
In Mstimony whereof I aiiiz; my signature in presence of two witnesses.
