Specification ofLetters ratent. Patented Aug. 5, 1919..
Application fild Noirember 4, 1916. Seriai No. 129,503.
T0 aZZ w/wm z't may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD WHIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunbar, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tools and has particular reference to neW and useful improvements in pipe wrenches.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel, strong and durable yet cheaply gonstructed pipe wrench which may be quickly and easily applied to a pipe or other cylindrical object without the manipulation of complicated adjusting elements.
A furthe1* object of my invention is to provide a Wrench of the class described which is simple in construction, strong and durable, cheap to manufacture and effective in operation.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved pipe vvrench Will appear from the following detailed description and the claim, taken vvith an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench embodying the improvemnts of my invention, the same being shown applied in use;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective of the gripping javv removed.
Referring more particularly to the draW-- ing, Wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 10 designates the handle or lever of my improved wrench, the same preferably being formed with an enlarged end 12 bifurcated 'as at 13 t0 receive the pivot tongue 14 near the body portion of a gripping jaw designated 15 in its entirety.
The gripping javv 15 at the upper part of its body portion is designed to form a head 16, said head being provided at its outer end and at a point beyond the tongue with a slot 17 to receive an object engaging flexible element such as a chain 18, one end of said chain being anchored to a pin 19 carried by the enlarged end of the lever 10 near the inner end of the bifurcation 13. The head 16 of the jaw 15 is formed with a partition 20 through which sai-d slot 17 is contixined, recesses 21 being. formed in the partition adjacent the slot 17 to receive one of the links of the chain 18 as bestshown in Fig. 1 at 22. A channel 23 is provided in the head 16 of the jaw 15 to accommodate the chain when necessary.
The head 16 is provided at its inner end above the tongue with an inWardly extend-- ing recess 25 the walls of which are inclined toward each other while the outer ends of the walls form spaced gripping points or teeth 26 for engagement With the {peripher 01: a pipe P or sunilar cylindrica elenent. As best shown in Fig. 1 the chain 18 is adapted to encircle the pipe P, one end of the chain being engaged in the slot 17 by virtue of the recesses 21 engaging With the links of said chain. The jaw 15 is provided with shoulders 28 which are adapted to reinforce the same by virtue of their engagement with the edges of the enlarged portion 12 of the lever 10.
In use When the wrench is applied as shown movement is imparted to the lever 10 in the direction of the arrow, tbereby tightening the chain about the pipe, and as the spaced gripping teeth 26 are respectively positioned between the point 19 and the pivot point of the j aw and between this latter point and the point of locking the chain in the head, the chain Will coperate with the lever in exerting an equal simultaneous pressure on both of the teeth and Cause them to engage and firmly hold the pipe t0 ultimately insure of the turning thereof, as is apparent. The jaw does not move upon the pipe, thereby causing the chain to grip the pipe tighter and the pressure is increased.
From the above description taken in connection with the aecompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operatien and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the -device as embodying a speoific structure,
I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus -fully described ,my invention, What I daim as nevv and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is.:+
A pipe wrench comprising a handle, a head pivotally connected With the forward end portion of the handle and extending forwar' 1 of and to one side of the handle, the
:Eorwaid Portion of the head being out to provide a chain receiving pocket to receive with the handle adjacent the head and inter- 1 and hold the free end of a chain, the Side media the ends of the handle.
portion of the head being out to provide 21 In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature relatively deep pocket having its nner wal1 hereto.
extending longitudinafly of the handle and his its forward wa11 extendng transversely 0f J&RCHIBALD WHITE. the handle, th head beng provided with mark gripping teeth atthe outer ends of the Witness:
pocket Wal1s, and a chain loosely connected W. A. WHI1E.
