MEANS FOR THE REMOVAL OF BOTTLE AND LIKE CAPS OR STOPPER-S.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed December 6, 1916. Serial No. 135,361.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SUNDER- LAND, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 19 Fountain road, Edgbaston, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improved Means for the Removal of Bottle and Like Caps or Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises improved means, as hereinafter described, for the ready and convenient removal of the well known crown or like metal capped stoppers of bottles, jars and similar vessels, and particularly to that type of such means or appliances comprising a looped or doubled handle part provided with a drag piece adapted to engage the rim of the cap or stopper to be removed.
In the use of the aforesaid device the handle part is placed across the cap so that one side of the latter shall form a fulcrum or pivot about which the drag piece may be raised, by a depression of the handle, into engagement with a portion of the rim at the opposite side of the cap. On the further depression of the handle the cap is drawn oii the top of the bottle or other vessel of which it forms the closure.
The object of the present invention is to enable the cap or stopper to be removed. either by a depression or an elevation of the handle of the tool such as aforesaid. For this purpose I employ a duplex or double action drag or cap engaging part on the tool. Such duplex drag can be conveniently made from a stirrup like piece having a claw or projection from each of its sides. The said claws on the side of the stirrup or drag piece are respectively adapted for engaging opposite sides of the cap or stopper. When the said engagement is effected with one of the claws the removal is efiected by depressing the handle of the tool or appliance, and when the other claw engages the cap the latter is removed by elevating the said handle.
The looped or doubled handle can be provided or have in attachment therewith a can 3 being an end view of the crown cork ex tractor.
Near one end of the looped handle a of a can opener is arranged the duplex drag b,
this being made toa stirrup form as shown and secured to the inner sides of the handle by rivets. The operative portions of the drag are indicated by c. Sufficient distance is arranged between one side of the drag and the adjacent end of the handle to aiiord the required purchase when the drag is actuated by an upward movement of the other end.- When the other side of the drag is used the handle receives a. downward. movement. With the handle is combined a can. opening knife d and a corkscrew c.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a tool of the class described, the combination with a can opener handle member expanded into a loop at one end, a stirrup rigidly secured to the side members of said loop and suspended therefrom, and a pair of drag hooks extending upwardly from the bridge portion of said stirrup, said hooks being spaced horizontally from each other, and longitudinally disposed with respect to the handle member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FREDERICK SUNDERLAND.
