In accordance with another characteristic of the -invention the shell {that carries the lamp bulb is movable in and out whereby the lamp bulb may be adjusted with respect to the reflector and in order that this adjustment may be permitted the rod is movable longitudinally and with respect to the head piece While remaining coupled with the head piece whereby the head piece is adapted to turn the rod in all of the positions to which the shell and lamp bulb may be adjusted in and out; lfhe mechanism for adj listing the shell in and out is desirably inclusive of e. screw connected witlrthe shell and operable from the exterior of and engaged with the casing.

The reflector includes a rearwerdly extending tubular continuation 3 in fixed relation with the balance of the reflector, this continnation constituting a holderor mounting.

The lamp base or contact carrier 9 is provided with bayonet 12 engegesble Within bayonet nce of the tongue and is slightly narrower than a slot 7 in the holder.
in the casing 2 is provided with terminal blocks 16 having binding screws 17 by which circuit wires may be secured to the terminal blocks. These terminal blocks are cylindrical and the forward ends thereof are tubular springs 18 being included in the tubular portions of the terminal blocks and operatingx to press contacts 19, 20 forwardly into engagement with the contacts 10 and 11, all of these contacts being within the casing. The springs 18 and the contacts 19 and, 20 thus not only serve to establish circuit for the lamp but also operate to hold the lam base 9 in bayonet pin and slot connection with the shell 5. The plug 15 is rotatable within the rear end of the shell 5 in order that it may perform its switching function and when thus movably mounted it is provided with bayonet pins 21 and which are receivable inalternate bayonet seats 22, 23, the plug being inserted from the front end of the shell with its pins passing along the bayonet slots 1 1 until they are in the zone that includes the bayonet seats 22, 23 whereafter the base of the lamp bulb is inserted in the shell with its pins 12 placed in the bayonet seats 13. The springs 18 thus not only serve to hold the bayonet pins 12 in the seats but also serve to hold the bayonet pins 21 in the seats to which they are adjusted.
It will be observed that the con'iplemental switching contacts 10 and 19 are eccentric with respect to the shell as are also the complement-a] switching contacts 11 and 20 so that as the plug is turned these contacts are either brought into engagement or are separated according to the direction of movementof the switching plug 15. When the lamp is in open circuit the contacts 19 and 20 are pressed against the insulating portions of the lamp base that are adjacent the contacts 10 and 11, the springs '18 continuing to press the contacts. 19 ,and 20 for wardly to maintain the bayonet pins upon the switching plug and upon the lamp base in their respective bayonet seats. The shell. and the parts within it are in front of the casing 2 and in order thatthc switchingplug 15 may be turned or otherwise moved with respect to the lamp base to cut the lamp in and out of circuit I employ a motion transmitting connection in the form of a switching rod 24 which is connected at -1ts inner .end truth the switching plug and which is operable from the exterior oiithe casing. This switching rod may be turned'to turn the switching plug to its open circuit or closed cir cuit position, this arrangement being broadly claimed in my co-pending application, Serial llo. 119,666, filed February 19, 1917. Other li'eatures are claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 149136 1, filed February 19, 1917, In my present invenis movable longitudinally with respect to the head piece but turns therewith, the back end of the rod being desirably made square as indicated at 24: while the head piece'is provided with a correspondingly shaped bore 25 receiving the square endof the shaft 24.
The shell 5 carries a bracket 27 that pro jects through the slot 28 in the holder 3. A screw 29, supplied in addition to the rod 2 1, is in threaded connection with the bracket 27 and is therefore connected with the shell 5. The head 30of the screw 29. engages the casing. By turning the screw the shell 5 is moved in and out to adjust the lamp bulb with respect to the reflector. The spring 26 expands or contracts to follow, at its forward end the plug 15, this movement of the plug being permitted when the screw is turned owing to the engagement between the rod 24 and the head piece 25 that permits this rod to move in and out with respect to said head piece. This screw and its complemental parts thus constitute means supplied in addition to the rod 24 for moving the lamp bulb in and out.
The particular form of lamp 11 illustrated is what is known as .a spot light but to which form of lamp the invention is not to be limited. When the lamp is, in the form of a spot light the casing is provided with a handle 2 and this handle I constitute a rearward continuation of the casing, the switching rod 21 passing through the handle to a point where it is operable from the exterior of the casing.
Any suitable means may be employed for establishing circuit relation between the cont-acts upon the plug 15 and the external source of current, there being illustrated a well known form of connector 15 which maybe employed for this purpose.
