Be it known thatl, HARRY A. DOUGLAS, citizen of the United States, residing at Bronson, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in `Reflecting Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates primarily tp reflect ing lamps of the Variety known as Aspot lights, though features thereof are not 1.o bcrestricted to such lamps, and has for its general object the provision of an improved construction and assembly of certain component parts of a reflecting lamp structure.
One of the features of my invention embraces a reflector carrying casing, a light source holder, and a handle (virtually constituting a continuation of the casing) which is supported upon the light source' holder and is desirably instrumental in effecting the assembly of this holder with the casing, the means for effecting this assembly of the holder with the casing being also instrumental in constituting the handle itself virtually a continuation of the casing.
There is also preferably employed a bracket which is desirably assembled with the casing by the coperation of the handle or other e ement and the light source holder.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing preferred embodiments thereof and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partiall Ain section, of a reflecting lamp contaimng .features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a long1tudinal view, partially in'section and partially in elevation, of portions of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of a part of thestructure shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view on line 4 4.- of Fig. 2; Fig. 5V is a view, partially in elevation, partially in section, of a modifica.-

flector containing casing 2 as in the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or it may be the interior surface of the reflector containing casing.` this surface being suitably polished or formed to have the desired capacity for reflection. The reflector carrying casin includes a rearwardly extending cylindrica tubular continuation 3 that constitutes a. holder or mounting for the light source. A. spring tongue 4 is integrally formed with a shell 5 that constitutes a holder for contact carriers, this spring tongue having ample rlcarance at. its side margins to permit itfreely to function. Some part of the tongue, such as the rear free end thereof, has a part 6 projecting therefrom which is nar row-er than the balance. of the'tougue and is slightly narrower than a slot 7 in the holder 3 whereby this portion may project into the slot while at the same time side margins` of the tongue 4 are adaptedfto press against the side. margins of the slot 7. The tongue thus presses upon a surface of the ho1der3 and, where there is but one tongue, forces the shell toward the opposite side of the holder whereby the shell is held in engage ment with the holder 3. The slot 7 is elongated so that the shell 5 may be moved back and forth in its holder 3 whereby in the structure illustrated the position of the lamp bulb 8 which is carried by the forward endof the shell in front of the reflector may be adjusted with respect to the reflector. The base 9 of the lamp bulb 8 constitutes a forward contact carrier and as the arrangement illustrated in a double pole arrangement this Contact carrier 9 carnes two rear contacts 10 and 11. VThe lamp base or contact carrier 9 is provided with bayonet pins 12 engageable within bayonet seats 13 constituting parts of bayonet slots 14. The rear contact carrying plug 15 within the casing 2 is provided with terminal blocks 16 having binding screws 17 by which circuit wires may be secured to the terminal blocks. These terminal blocks are cylindrical and the forward ends thereof are tubular, springs 18 being included inthe tubular portions of the N the contacts 19 and20 thus not only serve to bis establish circuit for the lamp but also operate to hold the lamp base 9 in bayonet pin and slot connection with the shell 5.
The plug 15 is rotatable in order that it may perform its switching function and when thus niovably mounted it is provided with bayonet pins 21 and which are receivable in alternate bayonet seats 22, 23, the plug being inserted fromthe front end of the shell with its pins passing along the bayonet slots 14 until they are in the zone that includes the bayonet seats 22, 23 whereafter the base of the lamp bulb is inserted in the shell with its pins 12 placed in the bayonet seats 13. The springs 18 thus not only serve to hold the bayonet pins 12 in the seats but also serve to hold the bayonet pins 21 in the seats to which they are adjusted.
The complemental switching contracts 10 and 19 are eccentric with respecty to the shell as are also the complemental switching contacts 11 and 2() so that as the plug is turned these contacts are either brought into engagcment or are separated recording to the direction of movement of the switching plug 15. When the lamp is in open circuit the contacts 19 and 20 are pressed against the insulatingr portions of the. lalnp base that are adjacent the contacts 10 and 1l, the springs 18 continuing to press the contacts 19 and 20 forwardly to maintain the bayonet pins upon the switching plug and upon thc lamp base in their respective bayonet seats. The shell and the parts within it are in front of the casinar 2 and in order that the switching;` plug 15 may be turned or otherwise moved with respect to tbe lamp base to cut the lamp in and out of circuit I employ a motion transmitting connection, in the form of a switchingr rod 24, which is connected at its inner end with the switching plug and which is operable from 'the exterior of the easing. The outer end of this switching rod vdesiraloly has a gripping head piece 25 assembled therewith by means of a pin 26. This head piece may be gripped in order that the rod 24 may be turned into on or off circuit positions and may be moved in and out to adjust the bulb.
The switching: mechanism which I have described is claimed in my (ro-pending' application, Serial No. 149,666, filed February 19, 1917. Other features of novelty not herein claimed form the subject mattei' of` my co-pending application Serial No. 149.670, filed February 19, 1917.
The holder 3 has a forward flange 26 'which is engaged with the front face of the .separately formed reflector 1 (in the 'construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2) or is engaged with thc front face of the casing 2 (in the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6). The handle 27 is carried upon the holder 3 and is desirably engaged therewith through the intermediation of the complemams mental threaded formations upon the holder and handle., The front end of the handle carries u [lange 28, the casing 2 being interposed between the flanges 26 and 28 as is also the scparatel formed reflector 1 I1n the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, these Hanges serving to hold this separately formed reiector and casing;r 2 in assembly. In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and (i the fiana'es 26 and 28 are closer together but in all tol-ms ot' the structure these flanges coperate with the holder 3 to hold the handle portion 27 and the reflector containing portion 2 of the casing in assembly. The handle is enlarged at the, rear end of the holder 2i so that there is ample clearance a lf'ordinar freedom for assembling m0vements and whereby suitable space is afforded in which the conductors 29 that lead to the switchiimr plug 15 may be disposed and in which space the inner ends of the conductors may readily move when switching occurs.

The flange 28 may carry a'holding` screw 32 which may be screwed into some threaded ople'ning 33 in the bracket portion 30 near W ich the hole in the fiange 28 (that is to receive the screw) stops when the flange! 28 is clamped home. l v The lower end of the bracket 31 is in ball and socket connection with a split anchorage 34 between the split parts of which the lower end of the bracket clamped by a clamping bolt 35. The clamp 34 is clamped lo shield 36, by clampim r screws 37. By means of this bolt 35 the clamp may be loosened to enable the lamp to be placed in any selected adjustment and may thereafter he tightened to maintain this adjustment.

In a reflecting lamp, the combination with an elet-tric lamp bulb; of a holder for supporting the electric lamp bulb; a refiector carrying." casing; a lamp supporting bracket; a clamping nut in threaded engagement with the holder and coperating with said holder to maintain the bracket and casing in assembly, the forward end of said holder being provided with a Bange, the casing and the bracket beingiinterpos'ed between said flange and the nut; a shell sup ported by the aforesaid holder, in which 116 `shell the electric lamp bulb is mounted and which is movable longitudinally of the holder toaliord focal adjustment; and a rotat able switching plug coupled with the Shell and serving to switch the lamp bulb into and 120 out. of circuit, this plug,r being operable from the exterior of the lamp structure.

In a retlccting lamp, the combination with a light source; of-a holder for supporting the light source; a retlcctor carrying 126 casing; a handle engaged with the holderefand cooperating therewith to maintain the" handle and holder in assembly with the casing; and a shell, supported by the aforesaid holder, in which shell the lamp element. is 130 mounted and which is movable longitudinally of the holder to afford focal adjustment.

In a reflecting lam, the combination with a light source; of a older for supporting the light source; a reflector carrying casing; a handle in threaded engagement with the holder. and cooperating therewith to maintain the handle and holder in assembly with the casin and a shell sup orted by the aforesaid ho der, in which she l the lamp element is mounted and which is movable longitudinally of the holder to aord t'ocal adjustment.

In a reflecting lam?. the combination with a light source; of a iolder for supporting the light source; ay reflector carrying casing; a handle in threaded engagement with the holder and coperating therewith to maintain the handle and holder in assembly with the casing, the front ends of the handle and holder having flanges between which the casing is4 disposed; and a shell supported by the aforesaid holder, in which shell the lamp element is mounted and which is movable lonvitudinally of the holder to aord focal adgustment.

In a reflecting lamp, the combination with a light source; of a holder for supporting the light source; a reflector carrying casing; a lamp supporting bracket; a clamping member cooperating with said holder to maintain the bracket and casing in assembly; and a shell supported by the aforesaid holder, in which shell the lamp element is mounted and which is movable longitudinally of the holder to aiord focal adjustment.

In a reflecting lamp, the combination with a light source; of a holder for supporting the light source; a reflector carrying casing; a lamp supporting bracket; a clamping nut in threaded engagement with the holder and coperating with said holder to maintain the bracket and easing in assembly; and a shell supported by the aforesaid holder, in which shell the lam element is mounted and which is movab e longitudinally of the holder to' afford focal adjust-l lnent.

In a reflecting lamp, the combination with a light source; ol a holder for supporting the light source; a reflector carrying casing; a lamp supporting bracket; a clamping nut in threaded engagement With the holder and cooperating with said holder to maintain the bracket and casing in assembly, the forward end of said holder being provided with a flange, the casing and bracket being interposed between said flange and the nut; and a shell supported by the aforesaid holder, in which shell the lamp element is mounted and which is movable longitudinally of the holder to ail'ord focal adjustment.
