Description

E. E. SLICK.
MINE CAR CONSTRUCTION,
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 18, 1915.
19%61308 Patented Apr. 2, 1918,
EDWIN E. SLICK, OF 'WESTMONT BOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MINE-CAR CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1919.
Original application filed June 9, 1915, Serial No. 32,998, now Patent No. 1,206,042, dated November 28, 191E. Divided and this application filed November 18, 1915. Serial No. 62,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SLICK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, (whose post-office address is Johnstown, Pennsylvania,) have invented new and useful Improvements in Mine-Car Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled I in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This application is a division of my application filed June 9, 1915, Serial No. 32,998 for mine car. a
My invention relates .to mine or other cars, with particular reference to those made of metal, whereby a light, strong,
economical and convenient car 1s produced.
, One of the objects of my invention is to provide a car body of sim le, but at the same time, light form 0 construction, which shall be stifl enough to carry the lading, and one which is so fashioned that a part of the car floor serves as a center sill to transmit bufiing and pulling stresses and at the same time gives strength and stiffness to the car floor and the body thereof to enable it to transmit the weight of the lading to the axles and wheels without undue deflection.
At the same-time the center sill provides a suitable receptacle for the draft rigging, inclosing and guiding the inner ends of the same, and to which the forward and rear stop plates are attached. v The features above mentioned may be readily understood by reference to the annexed sheet of drawings, which forms a part of the specification and in which like characters of reference refer to like parts.
Figure l'is a partial vertical longitudinal sectional elevation showing a part of my car in which the draft rigging, stop plates, and so to the ody of the car; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the draft porting plate are shown in relation ear and the draft gear supporting plate viewed from the car botelevation taken on the line III-III of Fig.
1; Fig. 4 is a blank form of my bumper showing the shape and punching, before bending by solid lines, and after bending into final form by thedotted and solid line; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line VV of Fig. 2, showing the rear view of the bumper in place.
Referring now to the characters of reference on the drawings :-1 is the .car body in general, the side plates being shown integral. with the bottom, while the end plates are formed 'of separate pieces, shaped as shown, and attached to the bottom and sides by means of rivets as illustrated. It, however, is readily understood that I may form my car body from a single piece of metal if desired. The side-plates flare outwardly and the top edges thereof arecrimped to stiffen the construction, prevent deformation in service, and to form a neat, smooth and serviceablevfinish, and the end plates, likewise, have their top edge 'crimped for the same purposes. '2 is the center sill of inverted trough shape, preferably embossed or struck up integrally from the bottom plate, or of built up section and riveted to the floor plates. 3 is the draft gear supporting plate, which is shown as of channel form with laterally extendin flanges, whereby-it is connected to the car ottom by means of the bolts 4. v
The forward and rear stop plates 5, 6, 8 and 9 are secured to the car bottom and supporting plate by the rivets 7 and 10, 11 is a U shaped bumper plate secured to the yoke 16 by the rivets 12. 13 is the front follower plate, 14 is the rear follower plate, and 15 represents the corrugated friction spring plates alternately arranged with the axes of their corrugations at an angle with each ingface piece 21 of the bumper 20.
eferring now to F i 4, a single piece of metal 29 is stampe or cut out to the shape indicated from which to form the draw-head and buffer. The bead or T end is bent so as to. be substantially perpendicular to the plane of the butter block 23, forming the bllifing surface 21. The outer ends of the bufling plate are bent inwardly so as=to provide curved end surfaces. This enables the surfaces of two adjoining bufi'ers to bear against each other on exceedingly sharp" curves, such as occur in mine track construction without danger from the plates hooking when the cars are passing from a curve to a tangent or into a reverse curve. To form the clevis 26 the opposite end of the metal piece is bent over into a goose neck curve, and provided with the perforations 27 and 28 for the coupling plin. The flanges 24 are bent. downwardly to t over. the yoke members and are secured thereto by the rivets 25.
Although I have described and illustrated my invention in considerable, detail, I do notwish to be limited to the exact details of construction specified, but may use such modifications in, substitutions for or equivalents thereof as are embraced within the scope of my invention, or as pointed out in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 4 A draft rigging comprising a rectangular bar bent into U-sha-pe, with the extremities of its free ends extending outwardly in opposite directions,- an integrally formeddraw-head and buffer secured to said ends, comprising an upper portion, an end portion extending downwardly therefrom and adjacent to the out-turned ends of said U- bar, a pair of downwardly projecting side portions contiguous and secured to the sides of the U-shape bar near the ends thereof, said draw-head being provided with an integrally formed clevis member, the upper portion of which is substantially parallel to the upper portion aforesaid, and coupling pin openings in said clevismember and the upper portion below same.
In witness whereoi. I have hereunto set myhand' in the presence of two witnesses.
